“The more sand has escaped from the hourglass of our life, the clearer we should see through it.” - Niccolo Machiavelli This quote has a significant meaning towards the question, to what extent is literature like an hourglass. The quote means as time goes by and the sand lessens, the clearer we should start to see things, both literally and metaphorically. This reflects greatly in the two books I read, Funny boy by Shyam Selvadurai and anthem by Ayn Rand. In these two books, I was able to see how each character runs out of time to overcome obstacle, they are fragile identical to an hour glass. And as time goes by, the gain more wisdom and see things clearly

The rules of the society confines the individuals and not being able to express themselves in any way, shape or form.
In the book funny boy, throughout the conflicts between the Tamils and the Sinhalese, Arjie does not seem to know what is going on. This was set to be in the time of the conflicts where both are going against each other. “When this is all over, will start to make plans for Canada” (Selvadurai, 304). This is the moment that Arjies father realizes that he needs to migrate to Canada as the conflicts seem to get worse. This shows that Arjies family is slowly running out of time identical to an hourglass.
In the Anthem, Equality 7-2521 discover a tunnel in the ground where he goes in the night to write in his journal where he tries to learn to discover himself. However, as he goes out after curfew and tries to discover himself, he has to worry about the time before the people check on him during role call in the morning. This is identical to an hourglass as the deadline happens when all grains of sand reach the other side of the hourglass. So all tasks must be done before he deadline …show more content…
