Aseptic Non Touch Technique (ANTT) is a technique used to identify and prevent microbial contamination of aseptic parts and sites by ensuring that they are not touched either directly or indirectly (Department of Health and Human Services, 2015). The fundamental core components of ANTT are to identify and protect key parts and sites. Key parts are part of the equipment that must remain sterile and must only contact other key parts or key sites. Key sites are the areas on the patient, such as wounds, that must be protected from microorganisms (Department of Health and Human Services, 2015). The ANTT provides nurses with a concise and logical theoretical framework to ensure aseptic key parts only contact other aseptic key parts or key sites (Department…

Although medical and nursing staff employ the use of standard and additional precautions the single most important thing that staff can do whilst working is perform effective hand washing to reduce the risks of cross contamination. Everyone has some form of resident flora on their body, this helps the host to stay healthy but when this resident flora is transferred by contact to another person this may cause the person to become ill. In addition to this resident flora a person picks up infectious particles through contact with other people or environmental surroundings (Koutoukidis et al, 2013, p 361). The most effective way an enrolled nurse or other health care workers can decrease the risk of transmission of these infectious organisms is…

What Is toenail fungus? Toenail fungus is an infection that gets in through cracks in your nail or cuts in your skin and can make your toenail change color or get thicker. While it may not seem as menacing as an ingrown toenail which pierces the soft skin of the toe, toenail fungus can also hurt. Because toes are often warm and damp, different kinds of fungi and yeast affect different parts of the nail, causing discomfort. Left untreated, an infection could spread to other toenails, skin, or even your fingernails.…

Percutaneous exposure or ‘sharps injury’ via skin breakage with a needle or sharp object is a well-known occupational risk for healthcare workers (HCW) (Ghauri et al., 2011). Obtaining a sharps injury exposes the HCW to blood-borne viral (BBV) infections, including HIV and hepatitis (Corrao, Mazzotta, laTorre, & DeGiusti, 2012; Hosoglu, Akalin, Sunbul, Otkun, & Ozturk, 2011). The operating room (OR) has continually been identified as the second most common work environment for staff to encounter a sharps injury behind inpatient wards (Cutter & Jordan, 2012; Health Protection Agency Centre for Infections, 2008; Jagger, Berguer, Phillips, Parker, & Gomaa, 2011). When handling scalpels theatre staff should be utalising sharps injury prevention…

I feel that this is an experience that every student in healthcare should go through. One of the most important observations that I made concerns the various procedures of preventing infections in the operating room. The prevention majorly focuses on the patient, especially when considered the patient has open sounds during the operating process. At times, the practitioners tend to forget the importance of cleaning their hands with soap and water or with alcohol-based cleaners when interacting with the environment (Scott, Earl, Leaper, Massey, Mewburn, Williams, 1999). Notably, the assumption that the practitioner does not need to clean hands simply because they have gloves is misplaced, and it is often overlooked (Weber, Anderson, &Rutala, 2013; Karki& Cheng, 201)).…

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are five instances that always require appropriate hand hygiene in order to prevent transmission of hospital acquired infections from healthcare professionals to patients—two times before touching and three times after touching the patient. The first is before touching the patient in any way with one’s hands; the second is before performing aseptic procedures; the third is after being exposed to a patient’s body fluid in order to minimize the risk of transferring the patient’s germs; the fourth is after touching the patient—also to minimize patient’s germs from transfer; and the fifth is after touching anything in the patient’s surroundings (Mehta et al., 2014; Monistrol et al., 2012). The methodology for hand washing recommended with respect to handling of body fluid is washing hands with soap and water and then vigorously scrubbing for at least 15 seconds and then drying thoroughly with a paper towel, disposing of the towel immediately afterwards. It is further recommended that all jewelry be removed before hand washing and not worn when in patient contact.…

Procedures in clinical laboratories involve working with biological samples that may contain viruses such as HIV and/or Hepatitis B and other medically important bacteria. Therefore, it is important that the laboratory workers protect themselves by using the correct personnel protective equipment (PPE) and by so doing protect the members of the public. In the microbiology laboratory, sterile techniques must always be used to prevent cross contamination of specimens but also to prevent introducing micro-organisms in otherwise sterile specimens. This can be achieved by employing appropriate techniques of sterilisation or disinfection.…
