Henry James uses a peculiar diction. His words with strong connotations create the repulsive yet respectful tone of the passage. When James uses words such as “perverse”, “socially unrepresented”, and “dregs” to describe the public at the funeral, it gives you the sense of repulse he feels towards this type of people. On the other hand,…
The book I chose for my independent reading project was The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, by Michelle Hodkin. I would recommend this book to people between the ages of 14 and 18. Hopkin's book is in the category of young adult novels which describes the ages I would recommend. There were definitely negative points to this book but the positives outweighed them.…
Henry James wrote “Odger’s funeral” conveying a negative and rude attitude. James is always saying or thinking something negative and rude. He does not like poor people but in this case he is also getting poor of manners. In the passage “Odger’s funeral”, Henry James diction conveys the feeling of cynicism.…
The process I just read was called the informative process. The main topic was about embalming and the process of embalming making it an informative process essay. In the essay it talked about the steps and it went into detail about the process they go through to embalm a person. My opinion on embalming a person is very…
There comes a time in almost everyone’s life where they will need funeral quotes for a loved one that has passed away. This can be one of the hardest things to look up. You want to be able to find a remembrance quote that will fit the passed ones personality the best. If they were a funny person you might want a quote with a hint of humor. If they were on the more serious side you might want to find a quote that is serious.…
The tale I picked is Cuban: ‘In Cuba I Was a German Shepherd’ by Ana Menendez I chose this tale because the name simply lured me more than the other tale. This tale is about 4 men who gathered under a banyan tree every morning to play dominos and remember the old times. I didn’t like the story because it had many vocabulary that I didn’t understand, and sometimes I didn’t even understand what the man were talking about. "I'm not going to be the sad spectacle in someone's vacation slide show," Máximo, Antonio, Raúl, and Carlos got together every day in the morning to set under a banyan tree in a rectangle shaped park, and sometimes remember their homes when the wind passes through the tree leaves.…
When I was only ten years old, I told my mother I wanted to be a funeral director and/or embalmer when I got older. Thirteen years later, I am still saying that same phrase, but only this time it is hitting a little closer to home. I have been waiting 4,745 days to finally be able to say that I am only one year away from achieving that long term goal of mine and I could not be more excited. Although I knew exactly what I wanted to do at such young age, I did not apply to mortuary science school straight out of high school like I could have. After I received my academic honors diploma from high school, I attended Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame.…
The narrator of this story is an African American boy, who has recently graduated from high school. Throughout the story, he constantly thinks about his grandfather’s final words. On his deathbed, the narrator’s usually meek grandfather said that he was a “traitor”. He said that they too should stay in there place in public but quietly fight as well. The narrator follows in his grandfather’s advice and is very well liked by the white community.…
It is not until later on in the story that we find out the mysterious letter is one addressed to James’ friend Ralphy in Arizona. The letter features another one of James’ intricate lies, this one being that his mother had been “coughing up blood,” followed by, “the doctors weren’t sure what was wrong with her…” By starting the story off so ambiguously, Wolff creates a distance between the reader and the narrator, which allows for the narrator to become increasingly more likeable as the story progresses. In the beginning, we know very little about James, and as a result, feel very little emotional attachment to his character. However, as the narrator reveals more about his pre-existing circumstance, we are able to sympathize with him and develop a deeper understanding as to what has led him to fictionalize his life.…
The story “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin, opens a window into the life of a woman, Mrs. Mallard who suffers from a heart disease and receives news that her husband has died. According to the story, she reacted differently than other people would’ve done, but that is where irony is presented. She decided to isolate herself and during her isolation she realized how free and joyful she was feeling, but the real feelings in her heart were loneliness ,emptiness, and fear because of the loss. Mrs. Mallard did not die of joy, she died because she was full of fear, confusion, and loneliness. Chopin decides to put this dramatic scene of Mrs. Mallard in a room of her house, where the couple spent plenty time together.…

A Life in Sight but Out of Reach The 19th century was a strange and highly structured time for women and Kate Chopin highlights many of these social controversies in her novel, “The Awakening.” The book revolves around a character named Edna, who felt constantly tied down by her husband and children. Despite her commitment to them, Edna still manages to discover a sense of freedom that she has been searching for her entire life. Although Edna’s freedom was in sight throughout the novel, it remained out of reach which led to the ambiguous ending where Edna goes into the ocean to drown herself and commit suicide.…
Henry James’ Brooksmith is the narration by an unnamed character about his experiences with a servant names Brooksmith during and after his conversations with Brooksmith’s master Mr Offord. In the story, Brooksmith starts off as more of a background character to the narrators and Mr. Offord’s conversations. But as the story goes on, Mr.Offord becomes ill, ultimately bringing Brooksmith into the story’s spotlight. Later on in the story we see the death of Mr.Offord, and then begins the decline of Brooksmith that will lead to his speculated death. This story is full of clever devices, such as a connected sentence structure, the use of an anonymous narrator, and a theme of “reciprocity” of speech and its effects on Brooksmith, that make it the story it is.…
This short story anthology is a collection of stories, which show step by step plot driven stories that follow traditional plot, but also being bad and dark, leaving the reader with a disturbing image, which does not replicate what many short stories are written about today. The stories I choose to include in my anthology are: “Where are you going Where have you been” by Joyce Carol Oates, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor, “The Other Place” by Mary Gaitskill, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’brien, “Jumper Down” by Don Shea, “Jens” by Ross Nervig and Encounters with the Unexpected Animals” by Anthony Johnson. All these stories share a dark element within them making them all connect, leaving a perfect fit for this anthology.…
