The e-commerce business based in a foreign country has its own laws and regulations, but as their website is accessible all over the world, they must also follow the laws and regulations of the country of which the consumer is purchasing from.

The UK has regulations which affect the operations of e-commerce businesses; they are formally called the E-commerce (EC Directive) Regulations 2002. It doesn’t matter if the business actually sells goods or not on their website, but as long as they have a presence on the internet they must follow these regulations.

The following information must be provided and should also be permanently accessible. The full name of the trading company should be given somewhere easy to access, e.g. www.natwest.com is the name of the website for the National Westminster Bank plc which is a part of the Royal Bank Of Scotland Group. An alternate form of contact other than a contact form page on the website must be given; these are most commonly an email address or sometimes a phone number so the company can be reached in another way rather than just a contact form. A physical address of the company must be given, somewhere on the website it should say where the company is geographically located, it
