As written in Corporal Punishment in America Today: Spare the Rod, Spoil the Child? A Systematic Review of the Literature, corpral punishment is legally defined by the states as “encompassing reasonable force with some states (Texas being one of them) adding qualifiers that it must be appropriate, moderate, necessary, non-deadly force. Corpral punishment has been a longtime practice in Texas and was at one point allowed in educational settings. These findings suggest that spanking is a norm within the society in which Mr. Peterson and his parents grew up in. These findings also vary demographically with the highest approval in the South among African Americans, Prostants, people of lower socioeconomic status, and among people who have experienced corpral punishment as a part of their upbringing.…

The book Why Spanking Doesn’t Work, lists eleven undesirable side effects of spanking their children. The first undesirable side effect is that spanking a child will lower their self-esteem which in turn can send the message that the child is of little value to the parent who spanked them. The next undesirable side effect of spanking is that it will create a display of bad feelings in children which can in turn have a feeling of emotional distress and lower the well-being of the child. A third point of the undesirable side effects of spanking is that it will alienate the child from the parents which cause nervousness and tension when the child is around the parents. Now I believe a child needs a spanking every once in awhile when they act a fuss, if you let kids run the household with empty threats, and soft punishments, they learn no respect, and I believe sets them up for a life filled with let downs, and false entitlements that may lead them to a life on the street. Narrtio Clearly, the majority of parents say they spank their kids. Certain factors increase the likelihood of spanking, like geographic location (children in the South are spanked the most), family income (less money means more spanking), race (African-American mothers spank their children more than other ethnic groups) and religion (parents with more fundamentalist in their religious beliefs spank more than those who are less so). Also most people don't agree on what spanking actually is.…

In his article "New Study Finds Spanking is Good for Kids," Selwyn Duke presents us with research that seems to conclude that spanking is good for our children. He references a study by a psychology professor named Marjorie Gunnoe that claims that children who are spanked did better in school, were more likely to do volunteer work and were more likely to go to college. Duke uses the study to back up his ideas that children need corporal punishment despite previous studies showing it is harmful. He reasons that those previous studies weren 't very scientific. He then gives theories as to why he believes this new research is true, saying those who don 't spank are overly permissive and that violence is natural and sometimes necessary.…

Parents also say that it is normal to spank children and that it is just disciplinary actions (“The Spanking Debate” 1).…

In a positive family setting, spanking has been found to be positive for children with the non-use of illegal, attending church, and having a “happy” parental marriage (Goodparent.org 4). In a family setting, spanking impacts the overall parental marriage, because it’s a tool of discipline for the entire family to follow. Moreover, a child will receive some type of spanking, either if it’s by the law or the economy. Authoritative parents who balance firm control and favor corporal punishment, have children that are achievement oriented, friendly toward peers, and cooperative with adults (Goodparent.org 3). The long-term effect of physical discipline will leave the child with success in the end.…

We asked a group of students questions related to spanking and discipline that led them to critically debate and discuss the issues related to spanking. We also used this method to have our interviewees think about alternative punishments outside of spanking. Another method we used in our video was providing quantitative and qualitative research to support our claims that spanking can have more negative outcomes than positive. We provided examples of research and studies that showed correlations between people who had been spanked and negative outcomes. Our intention is to get the video viewers to be aware of what the research shows and to get them to think critically about spanking and what methods may be better for punishment besides…
