Functionalist are people who believe society is a system made of parts and that all parts must work together to create a whole. If one part fails, other parts must fill in to maintain the whole. In other words, functionalists believe that every person in a society has a job, and that each person must complete their job to keep things running smoothly. Functionalists portray that each part of society is necessary to fulfill different social needs, and that all parts are needed and depend on each other. I picked the functionalist theory because I do believe that societies rely on the consistency of all parts and their functions to operate. This role requires a lot of time and patience. Some of the functions of a mothers role are cooking meals, bathing and dressing my son, teaching my child new things daily, as well as cleaning and maintaining our household. Being a mom can be a very difficult role, especially on days when circumstances change or problems occur that interfere with the functions of my role. Other roles in my life, such as being a student, or a sister, can also interfere with the functions of my role as a mother, which creates role conflict. On days when I am sick, or behind in my work, and have a hard time taking care of myself and my family, I lack the ability to fulfill my role functions. Due to situations like these, my fiancé must pick up the slack to make sure that things don’t fall behind, or fall apart, which creates strain on him and his responsibility to his role. In the same way that he sometimes must pick up the slack when I am unable to perform my duties, I am also required to pick up the providing duties when he becomes ill, or Is unable to fulfill his role.
