When studying social stratification there is a number of different types of inequality. Some forms of inequality that exist in society range from income and power inequality; race and ethnicity; age and lastly gender inequality. Gender inequality has been a big issue for many decades. The fight for equal rights and equal opportunity probably first started in the US in 1848 with the feminist movement (Feminism and Women 's Studies, 2005). There have been numerous movements and protests since then, furthermore; this is still an issue across the world.
An article from the Guardian explains a study done in Australia about the inequality between genders; specifically it focuses on the discrimination of women. This article mainly focused on the experiences of young girls between the ages of 15 to 19. Plan International Austrialia and Our Watch conducted this survey. (Hunt, 2016) They had a sample size of 600 females. The survey of these young girls suggests that about 69% of them agree that

Gender inequality is a societal issue and there are many things that are put in place that put women at a disadvantage. However, the way society is structured is more to due with the dispersion of power and the way that people talk about women. Additionally, in some cases even how women talk about themselves. The institutions that exist in society can only change when more resources are available to women. When the number of resources for men is the same for women. Additionally institutions can change once the language used to describe women changes and becomes more positive and inclusive. It is a trickle down affect, one cannot change without the other. There needs to be a positive conservation and a willingness to change the existing situation in order for institutions such as schools and the workplace to change their view and way of doing
