Functional Touching At The Workplace

An example of Functional touching is when I had my teeth cleaned a few months ago at my dentist’s office. I felt comfortable allowing an acquaintance to scrap my teeth with a small tool in the confines of a private office. I would not be comfortable with a napkin pinned to my shirt with drool spilling out of my mouth wide-open mouth in the grocery store.

A co-worker giving me a fist-bump today over weight loss success is an example of Social touching. In the privacy of our bedroom on Valentine’s Day, if I whisper sweet-nothings and my husband offers me a fist-bump, I would be upset, to say the least.

In an example of Friendship touching, my female friend hugged me tightly—finishing with a squeeze—after our last dinner party. At my local

The Internal Working Model is carried on throughout a person’s life and works as a cognitive framework of rational illustrations that aids in the understanding of our environment, the self, and our interaction with other people. In addition, it contains personal memories and expectations that actively guides a person’s social behavior (Bretherton, & Munholland, 1999), which are manifested through our thoughts and behaviors associated with closeness to others, when seeking support, and the ensuing sense of “safety and security” (Bowlby, 1988). Adults are continuously influenced by their initial infant-caregiver attachment bond in forming social intimate relationships, this type of attachment is now what we formally call as the “Adult Attachment…

Although medical and nursing staff employ the use of standard and additional precautions the single most important thing that staff can do whilst working is perform effective hand washing to reduce the risks of cross contamination. Everyone has some form of resident flora on their body, this helps the host to stay healthy but when this resident flora is transferred by contact to another person this may cause the person to become ill. In addition to this resident flora a person picks up infectious particles through contact with other people or environmental surroundings (Koutoukidis et al, 2013, p 361). The most effective way an enrolled nurse or other health care workers can decrease the risk of transmission of these infectious organisms is…

Some nonverbal behaviors that characterize my positive relationships include lots of touching, mutual gazes, open body language, smiling and we often mimic one another (that is modeling relational characteristics). Some nonverbal behaviors that characterize some of my negative relationships include physical distance, avoiding eye contact, closed body language and little—if any—smiling. I’m not sure why one relationship became more positive. In the first relationship, I fell in love and we purposefully worked to fulfill one another’s needs in a meaningfully way. We also built upon mutual respect.…

Breaking Social Norms In today’s world we are given a list of social norms we feel compelled to follow as a society. Norms typically change over time due to several different factors and reasons throughout generations. Over the past two days I have spent my time breaking the norm of giving personal space by sitting extremely close to strangers and documenting the people’s reactions while doing so.…

For example, little girls maintain their friendships through the exchange of secrets and mindfulness, while women regard conversation as the corner stone of a relationship (Tannen 282). Therefore, a woman expects her husband to be just like a best friend who listens and gives feed back on what she is trying to say. According to linguistic Lynette Hirschman, “women make more listener noise, such as ‘mhm’, ‘yeah’, and ‘uhuh’ to show ‘I’m with you’” (Tannen 284). However, men are found to give silent attention, making it seem like not any attention is being given to the women.…

I have always had a bad habit of violating social norms whether it be raising my hand to use the bathroom, making loud noises in public, being completely silent when near close friends, or holding the door open at in awkward distance, or in awkward positions. One of my favorite social norms to break has always been awkward eye contact, or when someone else is staring at me, male or female I wink. I enjoy making people feel uncomfortable and violating social norms is the easiest way to do this, it is also the only way to do this. I had to do some thinking of a social norm that I could go against that I already do not break that often, and when I think I tend to fidget with whatever is in my hand. When I started my “Act of Deviance” I was originally just fidgeting with a pen in sociology, and then Lydia Cook started and…

As I was violating this social norm, I felt strange and out of place. I had a lot of awkward encounters that day and i think it was because i normally don't stop and start talking to strangers or greet them by using hand gestures. Normally if someone smiles or says hi, i smile back or say or hi and then we both go our separate ways. With this experiment, I would have to stop and greet them in an unusual and personal way.…

Touch is used as a sense to interpret a clear meaning, for instance when someone is in mourning and you gently touch them on their shoulder to convey a sense of closure towards them. Haptics is used in this movie when Regina brushes Aaron’s hair in order to show her affection for him whilst also trying to make Cady jealous. Another example of haptics is portrayed in this movie when Regina held Aaron’s jaw when she was about to kiss him in front of Cady at the Halloween party which depicted Regina’s feelings towards Aaron. During the Halloween party when Janice and Damian were watching a horror film and Cady unexpectedly walked in, Janice and Damian got a huge freight and the results thereof was them holding each other tightly as they were both seeking shelter and protection from each other. When Regina sent Gretchen to talk to Cady, in the school’s hallway on her behalf, Gretchen hugged Cady and said that it was from Regina and that showed the intimacy of their friendship and how they showed each other affection through the usage of…

The common cold is a common viral infection of the nose and throat. It has more than 3 million US cases per year. Contact is initiated by moving, touching, smelling, hearing, talking, tasting and seeing. To do this effectively, an individual should be able to interact with others and the world without losing one’s uniqueness. (Corey, 2013). Through these functions we can achieve contact, without them contact may be avoided and blocked (Polster & Polster, 1978). Polster said, “Contact is the lifeblood of growth, the means for changing oneself and one’s experience in the world”.…

This includes anything from smiling at a stranger to a mother holding her newborn. Human relations come in all forms and happen on a daily basis. As human beings, we have to interact with others in order to function correctly in social settings and when we are dealing with those around us.…
