Have you ever been frustrated while trying to communicate with someone, but they are not receiving the message you are trying to send them? People communicate with each other all the time, without realizing that even though they are communicating, they are not communicating effectively. Communication is key to all, the way you communicate and get things done is more important than anything, and it can change everything. When you are trying to communicate with someone, your understanding of the message is not always the same message your partner comprehends. There is always a very small part of the message that you are sending that you both will have a shared understanding for. This is because we communicate in a way that is not always effective.

Affiliation is the affect or feelings we have for others. Affiliation is very beneficial function, people enjoy being loved, liked and respected. You can express it in several different ways; verbally, non-verbally, face-to-face, or through meditated channels (like social media). In today’s world, people use media technologies as ways to maintain a positive affiliation with one another. We all have a basic need to express to others, we do not want to be alone, when you express more, you get more. Your communication should be goal driven, we all have goals, we all want to meet our goals, and we use goals to guide our communication behavior. Without communication, all of our goals would be impossible. When we communicate we try and convince others to see things as we do, we communicate to have an effect. Influencing people is one of the most important functions of communication. Virtually, every communication is influential in one way or another. The ability of one person, group, or organization to influence others and the manner in which their relationships are conducted is control. When the code is shared the message is culturally bound, there is a perceived intentionality of the sender which then goes through the presence of a channel in which the process of encoding and decoding the message is transactional. Communication does rely on the use of symbols, but if you have a different meaning for a symbol than your partner does, it can create controversy. On the other hand a symbol can take on a new meaning if at least two people agree that it will have meaning for them. You have to be careful that both you and the person you are communicating with have the same definition for the symbols you are referring too. Symbolic behaviors are grouped into patterns to create a code, which creates a meaningful message.
