A major component in effectiveness of FCT is that the mand being taught results in the same reinforcers that were previously provided contingent upon the aberrant behavior (Carr, 1988). The child is taught an alternative behavior that is functionally appropriate, which can be widely used to communicate to other people their wants. This new behavior would give the child access to reinforcement, while eliminating the need for the problem behavior. FCT is a widely used procedure that has sufficient empirical support to characterize it as a well-established treatment for a variety of problem behaviors (Kurtz et al., …show more content…
The researchers were able to successfully use FCT to replace problem behavior with an alternative form of communication by using multiple forms of reinforcement.. Behaviors that are used to gain access to more than one form of reinforcement can be difficult because it may not be known what the child wants. To replace a specific problem behavior this study provided all forms of reinforcement indicated by the functional analysis results on the occurrence of a particular mand. The researchers used the results from the functional analysis to determine all the types of reinforcement that would be provided contingent upon the mand. This method saw a significant decrease is problem behavior when the alternate response produced all forms of reinforcement. Through additional adaptations to the treatment the participants increased the rate of specific mands to access different forms of reinforcement. FCT is effective in decreasing the rate of problem behaviors that are maintained by more than one
