Taking the information from steps one and two, one can form categorize behavior and form hypotheses about why a behavior is occurring. There are three categories to place these behaviors into, which will help in creating a behavioral intervention plan. The three categories address the reason that the behavior keeps occurring, either it is serving as a function for a student, it may be compensating for a skill deficit, or it could be related to a performance deficit. When the behavior is related to a skill or performance deficit, it is important to create a portion of the behavioral performance plan that will address the deficit as well. This assessment can be used to look at individual behavior, or it could be used to assess and make adjustments for an entire class with behavioral issues. By conducting these assessments, a teacher, or other professionals, can pinpoint specific contributors to negative behavior and work to eliminate those triggers. Being aware of different types of assessments that will match the behavior being observed will also be important.
