For this class we were required to go over to the elementary school and help in the classroom that we were assigned. I was assigned to kindergarten teacher of 24 years experience. She had me working with several students but one in particular that was very low. Each and every day I would go in and pull that student aside to work on her basic skills. When I first started working with her she did not even know how to hold her pencil correctly. Because of that, she was unable to write her name and definitely could not write sentences. She had a lot to learn. By the end of the year, she was able to read and write full sentences with very little help. This student would have had a very hard time in school if she had missed kindergarten. With today’s day and age it is very easy for kids to give up if things don’t come easy or if they feel that they are not as smart as the others. With making kindergarten mandatory we can assure that all children at the age of five have an equal opportunity to learn and grow. “It levels the playing field so that every child has access to the same academics, whether the family can pay for it or not.” (Samuels). All students deserve an equal chance at a quality education. Unfortunately not all parents send their children to
