Although fruit flies only have four chromosomes, they have similar gene with human's genes (Glick, Neimeier …show more content…
All three contain a small cup, water, and food medium that is provided by the professor. To make the vials, 1 level of Formula 4-24 Instant Drosophila Medium is placed in each plastic vial (Glick, Neimeier and Aiello). Then 1 level of tap water is added into the vials, next 6 to 10 grains of yeast is counted carefully and placed into each of the three vial. After which the vials are then properly labeled with: the date of creation followed by “P generation” (parental generation), lab meeting time, group members’ names. When the preparation for the vial or complete, they are set aside for later.
The next procedure is to identify the thirty three flies provided by the instructor. Thirty fruit files are handled while they are immobilized with fly nap, provide by the instructor, to prevent them from flying away (Glick, Neimeier and Aiello). The fly nap is placed in between the foam cap and the plastic vial. The anesthetized flies are poured onto a sheet of paper and handled with a paintbrush. A dissecting microscope is utilized to assistance with identifying sex, eye color, and wing …show more content…
The F_1 offspring that unhatched now have different phenotype and need to be identified. The fruit flies are first immobilized, then the anesthetized flies are poured out of the vials on a sheet of paper and manipulated with a paintbrush (Glick, Neimeier and Aiello). The fruit flies’ gender and phenotypes are identified using a dissecting microscope. When the flies gender and phenotype are properly identified and counted, the information is recorded on sheet of paper. Secondly, the F_1generation is released into the wild to prevent parents and children from mating; thus creating a confusing genetics (Glick, Neimeier and Aiello). While the offspring of the F_1 is kept untouched and vials are put aside to be analyzed next week.
Week 3 The fruit flies in the three plastic vials are first anesthetized. Next, the fruit flies’ gender and phenotypes are identified using a dissecting microscope. When the flies gender and phenotype are properly identified and counted, the information is recorded on sheet of paper (Glick, Neimeier and Aiello). After which, the F_2 generation is released into the wild and the vials’ content are discarded into the trash and vials are properly
