Fruit Flies Research Papers

Decent Essays
I was assigned two projects as a summer research student. The first was to create a strain of fruit flies that had a gene coding for a DNA polymerase (pol. theta) knocked out. The second was to document the stages of development of mus-308 knockout embryos through time-lapse microscopy. The latter project was somewhat difficult to complete, as early on the embryos would die prior to reaching the microscope. Through careful examination, and some thinking outside the box, I was able deduce that an adhesive gel in which the embryos were submerged was killing them pre-maturely. My experience as Tufts was a great one because it taught me how to think outside the box.

Roly Pollie Party; How Different Types of Music Impact Pill Bugs Behavior In our experiment, my partner and I came up with the hypothesis that the vibrations of different kinds of music would affect the behavior of pill bugs. Pill bugs, also know as Roly Pollies, are small, black, terrestrial crustaceans, that roll up to protect themselves from predators. Pill bugs can't hear, but they can sense the vibrations from the sounds. This lead my partner and I to see how the vibrations from the sound would impact the behavior of the Roly Pollies.…

Industrial Hygiene (IH) continues to assist Facilities Services and Human Resources in addressing a bed bug issue at the Material Distribution Center (MDC). Traps placed in the affected office area at the MDC, in response to employee complaints of “bites,” revealed live bed bugs on the morning or Aug. 31. An inspection by a specialty exterminator, provided by IH that same day, revealed the presence of bed bugs in several cubicles in the area, including heavy concentrations under the cushion of one office chair. All affected areas were treated cryogenically to kill the bed bugs and a further inspection with a bed bug sniffing dog service was conducted the night of Sept. 1. Another live bed bug was discovered by an employee the morning of…

Introduction: Drosophila melanogaster, which commonly is known as fruit fly, has been used in genetic study for centuries. They tend to give birth to a large amount of offspring while their life cycles and generations are short. Their genes can be mutated easily by radiation or mutagens in food. They have four large chromosomes with approximately fourteen thousands genes. As expected, human have several times more gene than D. melanogaster, however, we have almost the same number of gene families.…

“Who made what?” After learning the different variations of genetic traits passed down to the offspring, my team and I were influenced to conduct research regarding the genetic variations of fruit flies. “Which mode of inheritance do the yellow body and curly wing trait follow?” After coordinating research, it is evident that: Because only 2 yellow bodies can only reproduce other yellow bodies, Curly wings can have either Curly or Wild-wing off spring, and the characteristics of dominant and recessive genes, the yellow body genetic trait is a sex-linked recessive trait---while the Curly Wing genetic trait is a Dominant allele trait. In genetics, recessive and dominant genes are key factors in determining the phenotypes and genotypes in the offspring. Dominant genes are the expressed trait shown in the offspring, meaning if two alleles of a pair differ, the dominant gene is the gene that determines the phenotype and genotype.…

One reason why we decided to use fruit fly’s for our project is that they share many of the same genetics with humans. “Fruit flies share 75% of the genes that cause disease with humans,” which can help scientists discover new diseases very quickly. (Service) Along with that, fruit flies are very low maintenance creatures. With them being very low maintenance, researchers and scientists can have millions of them at a time to work with. As in our class, we also had large amounts of flies to count and study genetics.…
