Fruit Flies Lab Report

Improved Essays
In the lab we set out to test how fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) responded to different stimulus in their environment, especially to chemicals, as it was the main focus of our investigation. After recording the flies' preferences we sought to find a pattern in their chemicals of choice, and pH was used to answer that question. The objective of the experiment was to either confirm or disprove of our hypothesis that the fruit flies would be more attracted to acidic compounds, instead of alkaline ones.
Based on the two graphs provided, it is evident that the flies' attraction to a substance has a direct correlation to its pH and it was possible to conclude that in fact the flies are more attracted to acidic substances, meanwhile alkalines

To put the flies to sleep, first, two Drosophila Anesthetizers were obtained. One of the two sponge caps was soaked in ether (1 mL). Then, the glass vial containing Drosophila was gently and quickly tapped on the lab bench to temporarily disorient the flies. The cap was removed and a Drosophila Anesthetizer was placed on over the vial. The vial and the Anesthetizer were flipped over and tapped against the lab bench to disorient the flies again.…

We hypothesized that pill bugs would display a positive hydrotaxis and a negative chemotaxis, but our last experiment supports a reaction to chemotaxis. Since we placed them in a tray with all chemical-filled chambers, we weren’t able to tell if they drift towards diluted solutions because they contained more water. The products of the Chi Square Test told us whether the results of our experiments were significant or not. Our results in Part A and B were significant because the calculations proved the null hypothesis wrong and supported our hypothesis; the bugs displayed a positive hydrotaxis and a negative chemotaxis in these two situations. On the other hand, Part C can be invalidated because the bugs did respond when placed between 4 concentrated-chemical solutions.…

The orange juice attracted the most flies with an average of approximately 13, the water attracted the second most with an average of about 10, and the vinegar attracted the least with an average of about 6. The hypothesis also had the three substances ordered in the same manner. Additionally, numbers were almost evenly spaced out, as the averages of the orange juice and the vinegar both differed from the 10 flies of the control by about 3-4 flies. To further support the flies’ preference of orange juice over vinegar, a final test was performed using just those two substances on either side of the choice chamber. The results of that test were more compelling, as an average of 16 flies gravitated towards the orange juice over the vinegar, a 100% increase from the difference of just the orange juice and water or the vinegar and water.…

Determining the affects of natural selection on gall fly (Eurosta) larvae from different predators Ariel O’Neil Biology 1020H Abstract This lab was done with the objective of determining if directional selection causes early larvae death in the gall fly. By first examining the parasitoid wasp and birds predatory actions we can hypothesize and predict the smaller galls will be most likely to survive directional selection.…

Fruit flies are used in genetic labs often because they are small, produce a lot of young, and only have four major chromosomes. Since the fourth chromosome is so small, it is not used very often. The fruit fly’s scientific name is Drosophila. In this experiment, we mated flies to determine the location of a p-element on one of the three chromosomes.…

To sex the fruit flies, the flies were first transferred to an empty culture vessel to be anesthetized with Fly-Nap. Then the flies were moved to a wide field stereomicroscope and separated by gender. Male fruit flies have heavy dark bristles around the base of the genitalia, and females do not. After the F1 flies were sexed, males and females were put into a culture vessel to breed the F2 generation. As the F2 flies hatched over a seven-day period they were counted and categorized.…

The fruit flies does deal with dominant vs. recessive for the wing traits. Complete dominance occurs when the dominant allele complete cover (hide) the recessive allele. This occurs to the wing traits in the fruit flies. Normal wings are dominant over vestigial wing and base on the data, the female that carries the vestigial wing did not create any F1 generation of vestigial traits. This occurs because the male has normal wing so when the two parent meet; the dominant normal wing in the male completely cover up the recessive vestigial wing in the female traits.…

in the diet of a fly. Across the US, universities are conducting similar, but complex experiments about the dietary habits/actions of fruit flies. Researchers at the University of California, Riverside, recently conducted a study that explains how flies can detect sweet compounds - through receptors that can recognize diverse chemicals. While the physiology of all the sweet taste receptors are unknown scientists, like Anupama Dahanukar - a professor who led the research - surmise that “each receptor is likely to make a direct and independent contribution to the overall response … which could have some important implications in terms of developing strategies to block these receptors”. Further research into the physiology of the receptors will further the understanding of scientists and apply that knowledge to modify feeding behaviors of insects transmit diseases or damage crops, such as mosquitoes and beetles ( How Fruit Flies Detect Sweet Foods).…
