James Madison served as President Thomas Jefferson’s secretary of state and both had Republican views and beliefs. They were confident that in order for America to progress, less government would lead the way to victory. Their position on having a National Bank as well as a large Army and Navy were seen as being unnecessary and could threaten economic liberty. In order to go to war with England it would be imperative for a rapid and massive expansion of the Army and Navy which would require money from the National Bank. The harassment of American shipping increased and continued with both Britain and France, which left Madison with no choice after failure of diplomacy.…
In his article “Why Has America Stopped Winning Wars,” Dominic Tierney incorrectly asserts that the United States is in a period of unwinnable wars and that, as such, the United States should plan for battlefield failure and “losing the right way. ”1 He uses multiple fallacies to build his argument, including appeals to emotion, appeals to questionable authority, explaining by naming, and searching for a perfect solution. This leads to the conclusion that the US position as a superpower is a weakness in terms of military engagement. This shortsighted position fails to encompass a holistic view that military engagements do not have to rise to the level of total victory to contribute to overall strategy.…

During the War of 1812, also referred to as the “Second War of Independence”, the U.S declared war on Britain because it felt that the blockage of its ports, and the general interference with the Navy was too bitter a pill to swallow. To help solve this issue, British politicians had decided to tax their colonies throughout the globe. The American colonies, however, weren’t in favor of this. In paragraphs 24 to 28 in Chapter I of On War (1976) by Carl von Clausewitz, the author presents two very relevant concepts for U.S. policymakers to understand. The first is that objectives of both policy and war need to match up. The second is that, when determining policy, the “triad” of the people, the military and the government are inherently interconnected and cannot be considered in isolation. By fully understanding and abiding by these concepts U.S. policymakers would ensure that only necessary military conflict would occur to the appropriate proportion of force and, if it did, it would be fully supported by the people and the execution of war would be aligned with the desired political outcomes.…

Robert Middlekauff, the author of Why Men Fought in the American Revolution, wrote about the differences and similarities between the American side and British side, as well as the story line. The author discusses the soldiers’ motivations to fight, the differences between the British and American soldiers, the differences between the British and American officers, and the strongest reason the men stayed to fight. Staying to fight for one’s land or for freedom maybe be enough to have men stay and fight, but Middlekauff believed in other reasons. On page 136, Robert mentions that the fear of ridicule may have caused troops to stay in place. He mentioned that men who ran away during battle would be fired upon, thus causing troops to be in fear…
