Gender equality has been a long struggle in history and worldwide. From Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurtson, Janie is a woman who is trying to find true love and happiness in her life. She first marries a rich man named Logan Killicks that was arranged from her grandmother. When her marriage doesn’t go very well with Killicks she runs off with a man named Joe Starks who becomes the mayor of Eatonville. After many years being with Starks, she becomes a widow at an early age of late 30s and finally finds true love and happiness from a man named Tea Cake. Throughout Janie’s life with Killicks and Starks there were gender inequalities and restrictions on gender roles. From the novel, freedom is gained from gender role equality. From
