From The P-51: Blessing To The Allied Allies

The P-51 was a war-changing weapon and a blessing to the allied bombers over Germany. World War II started in 1939 when Hitler invaded Poland. Just like the war before it, there were many different kinds of warfare. For example, air combat, naval combat, land combat, and infantry combat were the main kinds of combat. The U.S was supplying resources to countries already in the war, the U.S did not start fighting until the Attack on Pearl Harbor on the early morning of December 7, 1941, by the imperial Japanese army. The very next day, the U.S declared war on Japan. In war, there are many tactics in the success of winning a battle, one of these is air dominance. In the early stages of the war, the German Luftwaffe was dominating the allied skies. Do in great part to the great planes the Luftwaffe had, the Stuka dive bombers, and the Focke-Wulf 190s were amazing planes of the time period. The allies did not have much in the way of defeating these planes until the British Spitfire came into service, but even then that was not enough. The United States needed a long-range heavy bomber to bomb the axis powers in submission, the wish was filled by the B-17 Superfortress, which first came into service in 1936. The P-51 now allowed the U.S to carry out more and more bombing raids over Germany. These bombing raids were extremely important to bring down Hitler. Most of these bombing raids hit manufacturing plants and oil resources and airfields. This crippled the Nazis and made life easier for the men on the ground. For example, the allies hit a German tank plant, which at the time was designing and testing the Panzerkampfwagen VIII Maus (Mouse), which would have been the biggest and heaviest tank in history, if the Allies did not bomb this plant.
