From Sleep Unbound by Andrée Chedid depicts a young girl who feels imprisoned by religion and her family. This young girl’s name is Samya. At 15 she is sent off to marry a 45-year old man. The novel begins with the murder of her husband and we are shown through flashbacks her life and how she got to this breaking point. We experience through descriptive imagery that she is extremely unhappy with her life where she lives with her husband and her sister-in-law. Sleep is used as a re-occurring metaphor to symbolise imprisonment and her dreams give us a deeper insight into the daily struggle that she survives. Sleep throughout the novel brings sorrow and memories of her daughter, Mia. It allows her to escape reality but, it can also engulf, hover …show more content…
Samya does not have a mother and therefore she feels deprived of this from her early years. The symbol of a mother represents warmth, kindness, fertility and shelter. Samya does not get to experience these elements in her younger teenage years. Symbolism of fertility and motherhood reoccurs when Samya has just married Boutros and they go to live in the village. An elder approaches her, “I am Om el Kher..”, and tells her that she will bring Samya some eggs. Eggs are a symbol and birth and are thought to ensure fertility. As the novel progresses, a child’s song is a symbol that foreshadows the unhappiness of Samyas marriage. Boutros is outraged when a young girl begins to sing of the night, “Night, oh my night!’ she sang.” (p. 65), and it wakes him from his slumber, “Bitch! Bitch! I’ll teach her to keep people from sleeping!’ “. These symbols represent the unhappiness that Samya feels when she is married to Boutros and her desperate desire to have a child.

Many states of Sleep are used in the novel. We see sleepwalking in connection to the novel. Sleepwalking is the state of performing tasks while asleep, “..of which one is unaware upon awakening…”. “Ali’s back was immutable; not a muscle in his neck twitched. The car glided between obstacles, barely missed red lights, swerved sideways to avoid hitting a pedestrian. Suddenly Ali leaned out the window and yelled: ‘Son of a bitch! Wait till I catch you! I’ll beat the life

We came to a clearing with trees growing in a circle around a very green lawn. This green was much more vivid than any color I had ever before seen. There was water and in the air sweetness. The reflections of this green light played on our bare arms and the light was transparent as if mirrored from the surface of the lake. The trees were elongated; their leaves no longer formed a compact mass but seemed to have dissolved into a light rain stirred by a constant breeze. It seemed as if invisible butterflies were caressing them with their wings...
And then I saw a man standing among the trees.
He was wearing a white flannel suit, clean and freshly pressed, white shoes and a white tie. He was tall and slim, as narrow as a candle. I did not see his face, at least I do not remember seeing it... With a gesture of his long hand he beckoned me to join him. I do not know what there was about all the whiteness and the man 's gleaming hair, but I felt sick. And though Mia 's hands were still enclosed in mine, at the same time I saw her walking a few steps away. All of a sudden she came to the man and they held out their hands to each other. With an air of sweetness Mia moved toward this man. I was helpless.
Mia went on walking. It seemed as if she were walking slightly above the ground. My hands and feet were like

In the memoir Night by Eli Wiesel, the author uses fire as a motif to convey the idea that death does not always mean the death of the body, it could also mean the death of faith and hope. For example the author states,”Never shall I forget the flames that consumed my faith forever. ”(78) This supports the idea that death does not always mean the death of the body, it could be the death of the soul and mind, because faith is part of the soul, so that means part of Eli’s soul died when he saw the flames. After this Eli becomes a different person, questioning his faith.…

Religious Symbolism in Out of the Silent Planet Christian religion is relevant through characters and setting by symbolism in C.S. Lewis' book, Out of the Silent Planet. “[Thus w]hat we want is not more little books about Christianity, but more little books by Christians on other subjects--with their Christianity latent" (Nelson). Because Lewis became a Christian after being an atheist, he conceals a lot of his religious references in his writing pieces, such as Out of the Silent Planet. When the text is analyzed, many characters and settings symbolize those found in the Bible and exemplify his religious beliefs.…

It is undisputable that the holocaust was one of the most infamous tragedies, or perhaps even the most infamous tragedy, in human history. However, we cannot dismiss it from our minds due to its great magnitude of evil, because we can also learn a great magnitude about the human spirit through the stories of those who survived and overcame it. In such stories, the resiliency of the human spirit is often displayed through symbols to which the author gives traits by associating events and in his or her choice of words. One well-known and powerfully written book is Night by Elie Wiesel, in which he tells the story of his own survival of the holocaust. This story is ripe with deeply meaningful symbols, particularly ones that show that resiliency…
