Traditions have led to people having a restricted point of view on the use of images in various types of texts (Books, articles, etc.). In Scott McCloud’s graphic essay, From Show and Tell, he discusses how the use of images in a story does not lessen the effect the story has on the reader. He believes when text and image come together the greatest works are made. McCloud makes this claim due to his background of being a comic artist. His profession incorporates the usage of both text and image to progress the story. In order to support his claim, he gives us examples of how a story would be different depending on the uses of words and images. Many believe that the use of images creates a childish appeal which takes away from a story. McCloud states, “It’s considered normal… for children to combine words and pictures, so long as they grow out of it” (From Show and Tell, 739). In science there is a lot of information that can be discussed among many. James Balm states, “Images help us become involved (biomedcentral.com).” This is true simply because pictures are a way to place a lot of information into a condensed view that is easier for people to understand and remember. This is because everyone has their own way of learning. There are 3 major types of learners, visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Most people learn using a combination of the three styles listed, however there are those who are more adept in one style than in the others (learningrx.com). Since not everyone is able to fully understand when information is being told to them, the incorporation of pictures allows for a larger amount of people to then understand what it is the presenter is teaching. This goes back to McCloud’s idea of the use of images not being childish and it in fact is a helpful resource at our disposal. When reading a comic, the reader is able to see the connection between the words and pictures, thus resulting in them having a more vivid image in their minds in terms of setting and how the appearance of a character is. Children are giving picture book with few words since it is easier for them to understand, but that doesn’t mean adults cannot read books of a similar nature. It is only when words and pictures come together
