Ragged Dick tries hard to become a better person. Ragged Dick was a bootblack kid, but he does not want to remain the same way like always. Poverty does not stop Dick instead Dick courage’s himself to change, to a very positive living attitude, and also to become better. The way Dick gets himself better is through education. In addition, Dick pays rent for Fosdick, his roommate and also friend, so that he could be educated. Through the education, Dick has better himself in the way that he could count numbers and speak formal language. “Dick now began to look about for a position in a store or counting-room. Until he should obtain one he determined to devote half the day to blacking boots, not being willing to break in upon his small capital” (Dick 246). This is a typical fact that Dick is eventually becoming better. Nevertheless, Dick did not relax himself by quitting blacking boots but keep endeavor working still. Because of the courageous Dick has, he saves James Rockwell’s, probably one of the wealthiest person in New York, child from drowning. “‘My Child!’ he exclaimed in anguish, ‘who will save my child’” (Dick 247)? At the moment nobody wants to jump out from the big boat because is too dangerous, however, without any hesitation Ragged Dick is the only person who is brave enough that jumped out the boat and went saves the children. However, Ragged Dick changed through his bravery, not only saving others meant to be bravery but willing to change himself also uses courage.
