During 1991-2012, there were two significant periods of economic recession that worth we pay attention. In 2000-2001, the United States suffered dot-com bubble and in 2008, the subprime crisis also has greatly impacted American economy. There is no doubt that Frog’s Leap would be influenced. Out of exceptions, Frog’s Leap also did a good job and survive from the spring of such a sluggish economic situation, but there are still some financial problem that the winery have to face behind its survival.

From Frog’s Leap Winery’s financial statements in 2000 to 2010 we can learn how Frog’s leap benefit from their distinctive strategy. As table 1 shows, overall sales have been battered in 2001 and during the economic crisis, but they eventually recovered 10 million dollars in 2009 and surpass their old good performance increasing to 12.15 million dollars in 2012. Unavoidably, the cost of goods sold increased. Thanks to their effort to insist sustainable production, such kind of increase did not impact the financial statement a lot. Their effort to keep sustainable resulted in the gross profit margin to a stable increase from 53.2% to 59.2%.

From Table 2, we can see that Frog’s Leap’s total assets surged 87.3%, from 21.3 million in 2001 to 39.9 million dollars in 2009. In other words, the amount of assets owned by the winery experienced a jump during these years. Seen their working capital ratio, which indicated whether the assets can cover the liabilities from a short-term perspective.     From reading The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, I would add a piece of technology that would help Jim Smiley win more bets with his frog. I would add a device that would be capable of measuring jumping height, force from takeoff, and the landing force. This way Mr. Smiley could go out and gather frogs and test them until he singled out the best frog for him to use in his bets.
