Have you ever wondered how a friendship can help someone emotionally when they’re in a tough situation? Friendships can often provide support to those who struggle with personal or family issues and to give hope in those situations. The short story “Zebra” by Chaim Potok, talks about what a healing friendship can do for people who are emotionally beaten down in life. Adam (a.k.a Zebra), the main character in the story, experiences depression due to the lack of friendships with his schoolmates after he was hit by a car and was temporarily handicapped from his injuries. On the paper, it said that “...famous John Wilson would be hosting a summer art class…” Zebra isn’t sure whether or not he should join the summer class, but decided to join because he wanted to keep this new friendship with John. What he didn’t know when he came to the summer class was that his friend, John, would help Zebra become hopeful and see the beauty within art. Zebra had found out many things about John, such as, he fought in the Vietnam War and lost his arm during a helicopter accident. However, Zebra saw that John has ways of overcoming this disability while creating art. This gave Zebra a chance to prove himself to John and the class that he could overcome his disabilities physically and mentally.
People, such as Zebra, that make new relationships will find it easier to be emotionally joyful. They will most likely feel lost or confused without anyone to help guide them through and to help them to see possible solutions.With bonds of friendship, an individual often finds it simple to cope with difficult situations.
