In The Chosen, by Chaim Potok, one theme wove its way throughout the entire story: friendship. It shaped Danny and Reuven’s life, and even affected both of their fathers’ lives as well. Friendship played a tremendous role when Danny felt depressed because of his experimental phycology class, as Reuven’s father had a heart attack needed hospitalization, and most of all, as Danny and his father overcame their silence. The story has the idea of friendship all through it, yet friendship affects these three situations most of all. Friendships are symbiotic relationships, where people share their talents and qualities to help each other through life. The novel, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, exhibits many forms of these two-way relationships, the strongest, between the characters George and Lennie, and the other friendships between Crooks and Lennie, and George and Slim. These relationships show how each pair benefit from each other’s companionship, and help each other in the harder times of life, the most important one, being the friendship of George and Lennie. The first and strongest two-way relationship shown in the novel was between Lennie and George, who share each other’s talents and abilities to fulfil each other’s needs. When discussing social change, one of the things we mentioned that is important in the social change movement was allyship. To me, being an ally means fighting for equality of groups of people who are marginalized, even though the issue being fought for does not directly affect a person who is an ally because they are not a part of the marginalized group. When fighting for equality, an ally’s role is to listen and support the marginalized. They listen so as to better understand what the marginalized groups are going through and, this helps them better support those groups. Allyship also requires one to acknowledge that they have a privilege that a certain marginalized group lacks.…
