In the book The Outsiders, written by S.E. Hinton, is a story about a boy named Ponyboy and how he goes through the troubles of life. The book which is fiction focused on the fight between rich and poor. It also focuses on the journey from youth to adulthood. The three topics addressed in the interesting book power of friendship, journey from youth to adulthood, and fight between rich and poor. First, the book addresses the significance of the power of friendship. One example of the power of friendship in The Outsiders is when Ponyboy stated, “Or I could have gotten one of the gang to come along, one of the four boys Darry and Soda and I have grown up with and considered family.” (3) This important because even though they are just friends they have been with each other for so long they are like brothers. An example of when the journey from youth to adulthood is shown in The Outsiders would be, “Then for the first time, really, I realized what we were in for. Johnny had killed someone.” (62) This is important because it shows that Ponyboy finally realizes that he is not an innocent child anymore. This is also important because it shows that people will not see them as harmless kids anymore. Another example would be, “I hopped off the car. ‘I’ve had about all I can take from you guys.’ I started toward them, holding the bottle the way Tim Shepard holds a switch - out and away from myself, in a loose but firm hold.” (171) This is important because it shows how Ponyboy is becoming more mature. It is also important because in the beginning he could not hurt anyone but now he’s threatening the Socs with a broken bottle.
