Friendship In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

John Steinbeck, in Of Mice and Men, suggests that as humans we need friendship, because if we don’t have somebody in our lives to communicate with, we close ourselves to other people . In the story Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie have created a strong bond with each other and became good friends. They are run out of the town weed, and come across work at a ranch in Soledad. They have a dream of having a ranch of their own. In the beginning of the story George and Lennie are traveling to work on a ranch, and are talking to each other. “Not us! a’n why? because… because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that’s why”(pg 14) this relates with the theme because it shows the relationship of George and Lennie. when they get to the ranch they meet candy who has an old dog he loves, the dog is very important in candy’s life. a little while later they meet slim and the other people who work on the ranch, they persuade candy to shoot his dog. “well it ain't kind bein’ to be keepin’ him alive”(pg 45) so after that candy’s dog died and was buried but candy was so sad and felt alone. …show more content…
