The age of the internet has allowed for several things to become easier and that includes making friends. People can find others who share their interest through blogs and message boards and despite being sometimes an ocean away; these connections are very real and can last as long as normal friendships. On the other hand, some are skeptical of the authenticity of these online relationships. Curtis Silver wrote about the messy and complex problem of making friends online and if they are real or not in “The Quagmire of Social Media Friendships.” Silver presents the conundrum of whether the term friend has become to mean less and less due to its online definition.…

The article discusses the reasons people tend to engage in social media, taking note that the main reason is that of my own: to keep up with friends and family. It states that in cases such as social media sites, friendships come almost effortlessly. While it appears we have many friends in sight of our social networks "friends list's", actual friendships take loads of time and commitment, lasting and meaningful ones especially. Sites like Facebook provide us the opportunity to rekindle old friendships and reconnect with others', they don't provide us with strong friendships. I enjoyed that while the article noted that friendships maintained through social networking sites may not be as strong due to lack of face-to-face engagement, it didn't discourage us from keeping our accounts on such sites so long as we also include personal time with our friends, balancing between both social sites and actual time spent together as the article…

Comparably the development of internet technologies means that individuals can communicate online in various ways such as email, forums and webcam video, this means that it has become easier to maintain and even develop relationships online over long distances. The emergence of social networking websites has created new ways of developing and maintaining friendships online, this use of technologies may lead to the questioning of our understanding of friendship and the potentially damaging effects of excessive use of social networking sites (Brownlow, 2012, p. 266). Something else to consider is the cultural differences in understanding, friendship and how online friendships show this as most of the communication online is still conducted in English, as is the research in this area, if such research was limited to online methods, these populations would be excluded (Brownlow, 2012, p. 267). However, Bigelow and La Gaipa (1975) could not have known that sometime in the future children would be as likely to interact with online friends as friends in the playground, this is an example of the way new technologies and the changing way of how people interact, brings about new challenges for psychologists to address. We will now look at research on the structure and…

Friendships nowadays are nothing more than an illusion because of the advance of technology; from the description of William Deresiewicz, author of the article “Faux Friendship.” Deresiewicz said that friendship has become both all and nothing when modern technology like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and other social media is destroying the friendship. Deresiewicz states that while people are friends with everybody, no matter if they know them or not, we have not understood the true value of a true friendship. The author compares the meaning of friendship between ancient time and the modern day. Back in the 18th century, Goethe and Schiller, a true friendship of literature and cultural movement; they support each other to the end of their movement.…

How we connect to people is different online than it is face to face. Social media allows us to be free to be the person we really are inside without worry about how people perceive us, even when we don 't feel we can be that way in person. For example, I have a couple of really good friends, we have been friends for over twenty years, and we haven 't always lived close to each other. Before we all had regular access to social media, it was hard for us to talk to each other, share things, and keep up on our lives like it had been when we could all walk to each others ' houses. Phone numbers would be lost, addresses would change, and years would go by while I lived out of state, where we didn 't all see or hear from each other.…
