My personal favorite character is Beatrice Leep because of the emotional strength she portrays despite the lack of an enthusiastic father or a loving mother. The first of my favorite quotes in this novel is, “Sometimes you're going to be faced with situations where the line isn't clear between what's right and what's wrong. Your heart will tell you to do one thing and your brain will tell you to do something different. In the end, all that's left is to look at both sides and go with your best judgment.” (Hiaasen 160) My second favorite quote is, “Just because something was legal didn't automatically make it right.” (Hiaasen 180) My third favorite quote is, “Yet he couldn't stop thinking ahead to the day when the owl dens would be destroyed by bulldozers. He could picture the mother owls and father owls, helplessly flying in circles while their babies were being smothered under tons of dirt.” (Hiaasen 180) All three of these quotes put together define the theme of the book: give help to those in need, even when society is going against you.
