In some instances the speciality of service JAG’s provide can best be defined by the law they cover that civilian lawyers never see. For example the issue of friendly fire which is best defined by Michael Davidson in Friendly Fire and the Limitations of the Military Justice System as “a circumstance in which members of a U.S. or friendly military force are mistakenly or accidentally killed or injured in action by U.S. or friendly forces actively engaged with an enemy or who are directing fire at a hostile force or what is thought to be a hostile force.” These issues are specific to the military and they are incredibly difficult issues for JAG’s civilian counterparts to understand.
