Friend; or foe. Although all friendships may not be perfect, they leave an important mark on your life. In The Scorch Trials by author James Dashner, Thomas is sent to travel across desert wasteland in search for the cure to his disease. He has nothing, but his friends. The author teaches us that friends will be with you for better or for worse as they must rely on others to keep them alive. However, Sarah Pinborough portrays the idea that friends betray you through her novel, 13 minutes, as friends are making new alliances. Towards the start of the book, a moment that emphasizes friends who are there for you when you are at your worst is when Minho looks over Thomas. He falls asleep with, “an animal of hunger trapped inside” and is woken to Minho motioning to an apple and the food in the other room. The text states, “drawing the last remnants of energy from somewhere deep inside himself, he pushed himself up onto an elbow and grabbed the fruit….” (Dashner 48) This explains the feeling that Thomas had, and the energy he did not. If Minho had not told him about this miracle of food, he would not have gotten the energy needed to survive. Minho also goes on to tell him to slow down his eating, or he would feel sick as the food would be regurgitated. Ultimately, it seems like he wants the best for Thomas. On page 49, the text says, “Only three days before, the room had been filled with dead bodies--now it was crowded with Gladers picking things off a big pile of food….” This shows that Minho was the only person to think about Thomas, who was sleeping, and help out a friend. He cares about Thomas and helps him in his worst, as Thomas would do the same for him. Another strong moment of friendship between Minho and Thomas, is when Thomas reciprocates the feeling. During this part of the book, the gladers are running through the desert in search of shelter, while rain, lightning, and thunder booms down on them. Minho is struck by lightning and his clothes are immediately set on fire, and Thomas must respond quickly. The text states, “he fell to the ground next to his friend...dug into the earth...and shoveled it on top of Minho.” It also states, “He knew they didn’t have time to stop, so Thomas grabbed their leader by the shoulders and dragged him to his feet.”(Dashner 136) When Thomas could have continued on, and searched for shelter, he chose to stop and risk
