Friday Night Lights Research Paper

In Salem, Virginia football is a way of life. Every Friday night at 7 a clock around eight to nine thousand people pile in to Salem Stadium. Salem prides itself on tradition and doing everything in a formal and old-school way which is why I think Salem is the perfect discourse community. Salem embodies everything a discourse community is and should be. For a city of 26,000 it may sound like a lot of people but it completely feels like a small town because everyone knows everybody.
If you have ever seen the movie Friday Night Lights, you would know what it’s like to live in a football town where everything in the town revolves around those football nights. You have certain fans in that movie that say certain things and dress certain ways and that’s what makes the town of Odessa unique. In Salem when I think of a Friday night I think of “The Old Mule Guy” aka Lee Eubanks a Salem legend, and the fireball guy who every game no matter the weather wears bright red and white striped shorts and hands out fireballs to all the kids. I think of my parents who have sat in the same reserved seats for years with the same exact friends for as long as I can remember. You have the student section which

From all the years of football in Salem you get a lot of sayings and old traditions that the community and players live on. “The Proving Grounds” a sign that hangs above all four of Salem’s practice fields has been the staple to how hard the players go in practice to prove themselves. Then you have Mac n Bobs a restaurant in Salem where before a Friday night game about everyone in Salem is there and after all the high schoolers and football players go back to watch Friday football extra. You have the tradition of Salem boosters who meet every Wednesday in Mrs. Diars room after Salem’s practice that day and discuss where to spend the money for the football team and

The movie City Lights was not officially a silent film because it had the sound effects, but if it just went with being a talkie it would have been completely different and in my opinion not for the better. Back then they had the option of choosing whether or not to be a color film or a black and white film. But they still decided to go with what they did for a reason. The comedy in the movie would not have been the type of comedy if it had been a talkie. Plus talkies are not the type of movies that Chaplin are accustom to.…

In the novel Friday Night Lights, author H.G. Bissinger narrates his time spent with the 1988 Permian High School Football team in the small town of Odessa, Texas. Every individual involved with the team feels a certain pressure from the community to be as close to perfect as humanly possible, causing the game of football to feel a little more like a job than a sport. Bissinger takes a break from his typical life in his Philadelphia home to quench his thirst of finding a town whose football team is the base of its foundation. In his deep search, Bissinger came across the desolate town of Odessa, Texas and knew that this was where he had to go.…

What started as curious young girls playing with the idea of mysticism quickly escalated into one of the most infamous trials in United States history. The puritan community of Salem has become married to notions of hysteria, mystery, and dark magic. However, through the investigation of Paul Boyer and Stephen Nissenbaum in their book Salem Possessed: The Social Origins of Witchcraft, the roots of the trials are revealed to be community based. If the events of the witch-trials are seen as symptoms for socio-economic tensions between the Salem Town and Salem Village, a clearer picture begins to form of the events’ true motivation. By focusing on the divisions in the area within the set up of the town, factions within the village, and WHATEVER…

Imagine living in a place where people are at each other throats, and in most cases physical aggressions occurs. In addition, the people being aggressed were not some dangerous, and malicious criminals, most of them were next door neighbors, or a baker, or even your teacher, they were a members of society who probably played an important role in the community, yet they were still being accused of the misfortune of others, instead of identifying and assessing the real issue, and solving.
