In this book H.G. Bissinger tells the story of Odessa, a football obsessed Texas town, all the way back to its conception. In the book not only do we get a great picture of what the people of Odessa, and more specifically Permian High School are like, Bissinger does a great job of explaining the football obsession that plagues the town and the economic troubles and racial and political blunders that play into this town’s unhealthy lifestyle. This implied, and not straight to the point, unveiling of Odessa’s flaws gives the book a nice feel that Bissinger isn’t for or against the towns ways, he is only pointing them out to inform and instigate change. This book is in the non-fiction sports genre. Friday Night Lights starts off in the thick of a football game, which is where most of the focus lies throughtout the book. It’s a playoff game, and thousands of football craving fans adorned in black are shouting mojo at the Permian football team. But just as quickly as Bissinger shows you the glory of the football program in Odessa, he shows you the not so glorious history of Odessa. This chapter, and two others, is where Bissinger lays down a lot of the ground work for his revealing of the racial issues, …show more content…
And oil’s gone. But we still got football, so fuck the rest of you” (247). This seems to be the mentality of the entire town, and we get this idea from Bissinger over and over again without him just blatantly saying it. He also shows us the political factors, that add fuel to the football flame, in a chapter where George H.W. Bush speaks in front of the town. He talks about football and feeds them what they want, because he wants the votes. Once again Bissinger doesn’t outright tell the readers that that people of Odessa eat, sleep, and breathe football, but we can assume so because a presidential candidate talks about football when there are obivously bigger issues at

In Steve Almond’s essay taken from his book Against Football, he discusses the negative side effects that come with playing football. He shares how such a violent sport like football can go from good fun to a terrible tragedy in seconds. Using an early memory of Patriots’ wide receiver Darryl Stingley getting leveled by Jack Tatum of the Oakland Raiders, Almond plants his opinion of the hard hitting sport into readers heads. Watching a traumatic hit on public television has the potential to permanently scar the mind of an eleven year old kid, and that certainly happened to Almond. He shares personal information about his life growing up with brothers, and how violence between them always seemed prevalent.…

Through his appeal to logic, timeliness, and his use of metaphors, he shows the reader how college football can be detrimental to the success of education in the United States. In his article, the narrator includes that “he loves sports” and “played them his entire life” to ensure readers that he is not just a hater of sports that never played (Salzburg 2). However, he deliberately states this to appeal directly to sports players and football fans. The author adequately writes a persuasive article that incorporates many literary techniques. Steven Salzburg persuades his audience to believe and absorb his position on football in…

The imagery of this quote drew me in. The vivid colors described creates a picture of a basic football field, maybe even similar to our turf at Colby-Sawyer. Bissinger draws this beautiful picture of a calm stadium, painted with the colors of competition, but then he throws in the portion of the text describing Boobie’s exit as an injured player off the field. The addition of Boobie’s exit to the beautiful scene Bissinger writes us adds more feeling for me as a reader. The text shows how odd it is to see Boobie on the sidelines and not playing in the game.…

In “Friday Night Lights,” H.G. Bissinger states that a resident of the town stated that “Athletics last for such a short period of time. It ends for people. But while it lasts, it creates this make-believe world where normal rules don’t apply.” In other words, the hypocrisy of sports is that sports, particularly football in Odessa, represent an idealistic image of success and a prosperous future that wears off to a blunt image of a reality where there is little opportunity for the town economically, and even smaller opportunities for the athletes worshiped on the field. Sports often represent an overly idealistic opportunity for young athletes to escape poverty.…

It is acceptable to conclude that the Fenger High School brawl occurred near the school, only about five to six blocks away from the actual school, due to the fact that school is a specific staging area. It is at Fenger High School where students, particularly students belonging to the Ville neighborhood and the Altgeld Garden public housing development, settled and disputed certain values that they both pertain. Fenger High School, sadly, had transformed in the most profound sense a staging area for the streets, a place where people come to present themselves, to represent where they come from, and to stay even with or to dominate their peers (94). For instance, a 17-year-old Ville resident proudly explained that they do not like them particularly…

Friday Films have had a major impact on our judgement of other cultures. The movie, “Friday”, is no exception. This movie takes place in the 90’s and revolves around Ice Cube’s character, Craig and his misadventures in a poor suburban neighborhood in South Central Los Angeles on a Friday. Although it’s a very comical movie, the depiction of African Americans is very degrading and inaccurate for both the men and women of the culture. The men in the movie are made out to be violent scoundrels, excessive drug users, and conniving thieves.…

As an African American in the still very racist 60’s era, Harlem writer James Baldwin finds it imperative to write a letter to his nephew James, in which he forewarns and advice’s his still highly naïve nephew of the oppressive and ignorant America that he is destined to grow up in. While he cautions young James of the harsh and crude realities of the era, Baldwin prompts his nephew to not succumb to the stereotypes and expectancies of the white American man. Through the use of various rhetorical combinations Baldwin not only appeals to the emotional, logistical and credible senses of his audience, but by infusing Sturken’s concepts of memory and cultural products, he makes this historical piece of prose relevant to the 21st century by retelling…

English Darby’s book How to See a Work of Art in Total Darkness the topic of “Black Representational Space” is discussed amongst other things. The book talks about “black art” and the proper representation of black art as far as agency goes. To start I would like to state the supposed functions of “black representational space.” The first function is to “designate a cultural territory related to struggle over relations of representation in regards to survival of black people”(English .29). This would include the history of resistance that gets erased through a white-supremacist narrative.…

By showing that even the University of Alabama’s biggest rival, Auburn University, Bragg put in perspective to the reader just how important it was for the south to prove themselves worthy. The fact that the south felt it detrimental that football game was to be won besides being casted away as an underdog by the rest of the country, shows the south was not always the powerhouse it is today, a logical fallacy often over looked when facing today’s…
