Music is defined as "The art or science of combining vocal or instrumental sounds to produce beauty of form, harmony, melody, rhythm, and expressive content." But music isn't really a science, we can all create music. What one person perceives to be beautiful in the terms of music, may be seen as screeching Devil’s music to others. Music is more than a science or art; it is expression, and it is soul. Any man or woman with a tone deaf partner knows how crazy someone can sound while singing. Yet even though they both acknowledge this, love can be so strong that even their tone deaf singing can be the sweetest sound to love’s ears. In the animated movie Rio, a Toucan named Rafael produces wonderful singing, but in contrast his wife’s voice can be considered ear- drum shattering due to how terrible she sings. Yet Rafael still says it is the sweetest sounds to his ear. This brings to question “Who decides what a beautiful sound is?” To be called music, does the sound need to beautiful, harmonized with exact rhythms, and have expressive content? I beg to differ.

The song Friday by Rebecca Black is one of the most questionable “songs” in regards to expressive content. It is considered to be one of the worst songs ever. Talk about rough! Yet this song is considered a genuine song, and by definition it is music. Granted it has vocals, instrumental accompaniment, and some form of rhythm, but it missing some form of substance. For those that like the train wreck of a song, it brings a catchy tune and bubbly lyrics that make the listener either want to bang their head against the wall, or sing along blasting it through the car radio all while laughing.
