When Paris told the Friar about his plans to marry Juliet, the Friar was further involved in the situation. If he decided to marry Juliet to Paris, while she was already married to Romeo, he would be disobeying his role as a Franciscan Friar. When Paris comes to his home to tell the Friar the news, the Friar tries to explain why marrying Juliet isn’t a good idea. He says that there isn’t much time to plan a wedding, and reminds Paris that he didn’t ask for Juliet’s consent. The Friar later says to himself, “I would I knew not why it should be slowed” (4.1.16). The Friar is conflicted which lead him to make Juliet sacrifice and trust him with her life by drinking a poison.
In addition, the Friar didn’t confirm that Romeo received his letter before Juliet woke up. This letter had such high importance, so when the other Friar, John, tells Friar Laurence about the letter, Friar Laurence foreshadows when he says, “Of dear import, and the neglecting it may do much danger”(5.2.19-20). This is important because if Romeo never killed himself then Juliet would of never killed herself as well. The Friar also should of delivered the message himself. The reason for this is because then he would know for certainty that Romeo got the message. This can also make one infer that the Friar did not have the best intentions for Romeo and Juliet because he has no way of knowing that Romeo got the message until he came or did not. Also, if the Friar was not there to marry Paris and Juliet the marriage would of been postponed.…
