The character Friar Lawrence helps develop the theme that everything has a good and bad side. This is one of the main themes that causes them to take their lives. Romeo and Juliet were unable to to defy fate but were unable to and it cost them their lives. Friar Lawrence says in this quote “Unhappy fortune!”(5.2.17) he blames fate for preventing Romeo from getting the letter that says that Juliet isn't really dead. This enforces the theme that fate has control not humans, Friar John tried to get the letter to Romeo but fate would not have it so and prevented Romeo from ever knowing Juliet’s true state of consciousness. Friar Lawrence “I hear some noise. Lady, come from that nest Of death, contagion, and unnatural sleep. A greater power than we can contradict Hath thwarted our intents.”(5.3.156-159) in this quote Friar Lawrence tells Juliet who has just woken up and found both Paris and Romeo dead that fate (greater power) has ruined their plans. This shows that humans no matter how they try will never have control. “O Fortune, Fortune! All men call thee
