Friar Lawrence Mistakes

Friar Lawrence, although an elderly man, was a knowledgeable and foremost character in the star-crossed lovers faith. At the first glance, the Friar is seen as a minor character whom Romeo visits. However, as the play progresses it becomes visible that he is a character Romeo confides in. This leads Romeo to plead the Friar to marry him to his now true love, Juliet. Apart from marrying a Capulet to a Montague, he advises Romeo to travel and live in Verona for some time to recuperate all the deadly mistakes he has chosen to make. As Romeo leaves for Verona, Juliet is informed that she will be marrying Paris, whom should I add, is in no way the man she wants to spend the rest of her life with. Recognizing this dilemma, the Friar, being an expert at various herbs and medicine decides to give Juliet a potion that that will make her appear as though she is dead, in order to not marry Paris and skip the wedding with him. All Friar Lawrence hopes to gain is peace between the two houses, but in my opinion, he bit off more than he could chew. Getting married to your sworn enemy sounds more like torture than love, but in Romeo and Juliet’s scenario, they are truly in love. After the incident Romeo rapidly goes to Friar Lawrence for some guidance. When Romeo gets word from the Friar that he is only banished, the Friar yet again devises a plan for him to go to Mantua and to return when everyone has cooled down. (Shakespeare 3.3.166-170) The Friar commands Romeo, “Sojourn in Mantua/ I'll find out your man/and he shall signify from time to time” (Shakespeare 2.3.169-170).
