Did Romeo and Juliet really kill themselves or was it someone else that pushed them over the edge? Friar Lawrence is an acquaintance of Romeo and Juliet’s. Even though the two families have a feud, he helps them devise a plan to become married and run away together. Romeo and Juliet both end up dead. Friar Lawrence is the character most at fault for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths because he could have taken different actions to prevent their deaths. Friar Lawrence had a chance to stop Romeo from making a mistake and he didn’t take advantage of it at all. Romeo is talking about Juliet to Friar Lawrence and says “Then plainly know my heart’s dear love is set on the fair daughter of rich Capulet” (2.3.61-62). Friar Lawrence says how he is surprised at how fast Romeo is moving on from Rosaline. Friar Lawrence also knows about the feud in Verona and knows that this plan could end badly. Capulet has decided to move up Juliet and Paris’ wedding to Wednesday instead of Thursday. “We’ll to church tomorrow…’Tis now near night” (4.2.38/40). This is an issue because Romeo could not arrive there in time for Juliet and the plan could fail and Juliet could die. Friar Lawrence didn’t think through the consequences of the plan and didn’t think through the possibilities of what could happen to both Juliet and Romeo. Friar Lawrence is talking to Paris when he says “You say you do not know the lady’s mind? / uneven is the course. I like it not”(4.1.4-5).
