As a result of his inability to formulate and oversee quality plans, lack of rational thought process, and his selfish actions Friar Laurence is ultimately to blame for the Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Despite his pure intentions, Friar Laurence’s decisions caused the extreme fallout of the situation. Instances such as his potion plan, officiating the wedding, and leaving Juliet alone at the vault all fall as evidence supporting Friar Laurence’s fault in the tragedy. To begin, Friar Laurence is unable to formulate and oversee quality plans. He cannot create a plan that is feasible. His big idea for Romeo and Juliet to escape together contained major faults. Consequently, he became responsible for the multitude of …show more content…
Narcissism etched the edges of how he responded to the environment. An example of such selfishness is Friar Laurence leaving Juliet alone in the vault alone when he heard someone coming right after she awoke. Immediately following saying, “I hear some noise...the watch is coming./ Come, go, good Juliet. I dare no longer stay,” (V, iii, 151-159), the friar fleed the premises, leaving emotionally-rattled Juliet behind, when she killed herself to avoid living on without her Romeo. Due to this utter disregard for anyone’s wellbeing in his own flight to save himself, Friar Laurence allowed the situation to truly end in the worst way; with both of the star-crossed lovers dead next to each other. Careless actions towards others leads to problematic endings. In addition, Friar Laurence assisted in the deliberate disobeying the orders of both families, and continued nevertheless. “Many critics of Shakespearian drama feel that the friar serves as an agent of malevolent fate” (Holland). Instead of using Friar Laurence to personify all that was wrong with the Catholic Church, he portrayed him as a religious man who was truly concerned for the young couple. He is presented as a wise, understanding man who officiates over both the sacred and secular rites of the play. He oversees the marriage of Romeo and Juliet, which he hopes will then bring about peace between their warring families. There is absolutely nothing self serving at work here because Friar Lawrence has no wish for recognition or advancement.…

If he had only been strong in his opinion that their love would not result in anything good. One example of somebody that doesn’t say that it is Friar Lawrence’s fault is Taylor Swift. In her song Love Story, it is inferred that the blame goes to Lord Capulet, even though the marriage works out. Also, last year, there was a mock trial of the case “Lord and Lady Montague, Lord and Lady Capulet v. Friar Laurence.” This trial deemed the Friar innocent of the crimes pressed on him, and that many of the things that he did were necessary and prudent.…

The Friar had good intentions but he gets too involved and it is left up to him to ensure everything goes as planned. He goes behind Juliet's parents back but he does have a good reason for this "These violent delights have violent ends" When his plan goes wrong he accuses fate, "Unhappy Fortune" So really it could be that Friar Laurence is one of the main people who could have been to blame for the deaths as it was his plans that went wrong although Romeo and Juliet thought he was very helpful and always had a solution for their problems. I think that if all the families had stopped arguing and disagreeing, Romeo and Juliet would not have died as they would not have needed to sneek around to see each other and sort out complicated plans to be together. They would have been like a normal couple and got married to each other.…

Friar Laurence was the mastermind behind most of the schemes conceived in the play. He was well intentioned, but all of his good deeds turned bad. Ironically, when the reader is first introduced to the Friar, he said “virtue itself turns vice, being misapplied, and vice sometime’s by action dignified” which means good deeds can turn bad, and bad actions can turn good. The fact that the outcome of the Friar’s actions differed from his initial intents happens several times during the play. Before marrying the couple, Friar Laurence had a feeling that marrying the couple was not the best idea.…
