As a result of his inability to formulate and oversee quality plans, lack of rational thought process, and his selfish actions Friar Laurence is ultimately to blame for the Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Despite his pure intentions, Friar Laurence’s decisions caused the extreme fallout of the situation. Instances such as his potion plan, officiating the wedding, and leaving Juliet alone at the vault all fall as evidence supporting Friar Laurence’s fault in the tragedy. Narcissism etched the edges of how he responded to the environment. An example of such selfishness is Friar Laurence leaving Juliet alone in the vault alone when he heard someone coming right after she awoke. Immediately following saying, “I hear some noise...the watch is coming./ Come, go, good Juliet. I dare no longer stay,” (V, iii, 151-159), the friar fleed the premises, leaving emotionally-rattled Juliet behind, when she killed herself to avoid living on without her Romeo. Due to this utter disregard for anyone’s wellbeing in his own flight to save himself, Friar Laurence allowed the situation to truly end in the worst way; with both of the star-crossed lovers dead next to each other. Careless actions towards others leads to problematic endings. In addition, Friar Laurence assisted in the deliberate disobeying the orders of both families, and continued nevertheless. The marriage between rival families goes against the status quo more than is acceptable. He thought not of the consequences, and went on with the marriage. Such acts without remorse or thought of others speaks volumes about Friar Laurence as a person. If he is incapable of doing things for the good of other people as opposed to just the good of himself, he is incapable of being a trustworthy
