Friar Lawrence In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet

Decent Essays
Imagine waking up to hear that one of your family members committed suicide in their bedroom the night before. A funeral is held and you try to move on with your everyday life without them. Two days later you hear that your family member was found with a knife in their chest and the love of their life, who you didn't know existed, is lying dead next to them. In Romeo and Juliet, the Capulets and Montagues are forced to find their children dead with very few answers on what brought them to this place. While many characters contributed to the tragic end of Romeo and Juliet, one character is more responsible than others. Friar Laurence is the most at fault for the heartbreaking deaths of Romeo and Juliet.

I think that Friar Lawrence is the most responsible for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths and here is my reasoning for why. My first claim to why Friar Lawrence is to blame is because he is the one who married Romeo And Juliet. If he wouldn’t have said the words “Till holy church incorporate two in one” (found on page page 858), then Romeo and Juliet wouldn't have gotten married and then it would not have led to Romeo thinking Juliet was dead, which brings me to my next reason. Friar Lawrence made a plan with Juliet to have her consume a potion intended to trick Paris into thinking Juliet had died.…

Friar Lawrence is the character most at fault for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths because he could have taken different actions to prevent their deaths. Friar Lawrence had a chance to stop Romeo from making a mistake and he didn’t take advantage of it at all. Romeo is talking about Juliet to Friar Lawrence and says “Then plainly know my heart’s dear love is set on the fair daughter of rich Capulet” (2.3.61-62). Friar Lawrence says how he is surprised at how fast Romeo is moving on from Rosaline. Friar Lawrence also knows about the feud in Verona and knows that this plan could end badly.…

Are Friars or priest supposed to be honest to their fellow brothers? In Romeo and Juliet by William SHakespeare, Friar Lawrence seems to be an appealing character within the whole play. In William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet, Lord Capulet is partially to blame for the tragedy due to his inconsideration of his daughter’s opinions and feelings, however Friar Laurence takes most of the blame because of his failed plan to reunite the couple and his well-intentioned, but disastrous decision to marry them in the first place.
