Friar Laurence's Speech In Romeo And Juliet

In the play, “Romeo and Juliet”, by William Shakespeare, a priest named Friar Laurence gives a touching speech just before Romeo and Juliet get married. The speech is about moderation in all things. Friar Laurence gave this speech during the renaissance in the summer at his cell. His cell was a room in which people would come and confess their sins to him. This speech, given to two star-crossed lovers by their priest gave advice about taking your time. William Shakespeare was a successful playwright because he creates a theme, mood, and uses technique in his play, “Romeo and Juliet.”
The purpose of Friar Laurence’s speech is to give advice to Romeo and Juliet for their marriage. The message communicated between the Friar and couple is that you should take your time with love. At the end of the speech, Friar Laurence says this, “Too swift arrives as tardy as too slow” (2.6.14). What the Friar is portraying is that marriage is a long-term decision and that loving too fast is just as bad as loving too slow. Friar Laurence is warning the two lovers that if they love too fast, something terrible could happen to them. In the speech, Friar Laurence also says this, “These violent delights have violent ends” (2.6.8). This line is used because it is warning Romeo and Juliet to take love slowly and not hurry. The mood changes from cautious to romantic throughout the speech. The mood becomes romantic when Shakespeare says this, “Therefore love moderately; long love doth so;” (2.6.13). This is said because romance is better when it is spread out and doesn’t happen all at once. Shakespeare also uses figurative language to express the mood to the
