Friar Laurence administered the marriage of Romeo and Juliet in the act of wanting the feud to end. Because the Capulets (Juliet’s family) and the Montagues (Romeo’s family) were in a feud with each other, the marriage was a big boulder in the way, especially since it was behind the parents’ backs’. In a way you could say Friar Laurence was stern, but caring about Romeo, Juliet and their families. As the play says, Romeo was banished from Verona after killing Tybalt (Juliet’s cousin). The words from the Prince stating; “And for that offense immediately we do exile him hence.” (III,ii,191-192).This destroyed Romeo. As he said; “There is no world without Verona walls.” (III,iii,17). But, the Friar stepped in with a plan because he cared about Romeo. He suggested to Romeo “Sojourn in Mantua; I’ll find out your man, and he shall signify from time to time every good hap to you that chances here.”(III,iii,169-171). This banishment of Romeo was a huge conflict, and again, the Friar happened to be entwined in the mess. But, the Friar was like a religious “father” to Romeo and Juliet because he deeply cared.
