someone unexpected helped Freud, a nazi named Anton Sauerwald. He worked for the nazis as a truehandler, his job was to make the jews hand over as much money and make it difficult for them to leave the country. For example it was impossible for them to leave the country if they were guilty of a crime or had debts. Sauerwald was an well educated man, working as a chemist before the war. He read all of Freuds books to make sure that he would make the right decision regarding freud leaving the country. Sauwerwald found out that Freud had money stashed in other countries in europe and that his publishing company had debts. However after reading all of Freuds books, he reqognized Freuds brilliance and felt that he had to help Freud. He hid all the evidence of freud having money abroad and the fact that his company had debts. Sauwerwald then helped Freud and sixteen members of his family attain exit visas. However the ordeal was not over there, as he was about to board the orient express at the Westbahnhof to paris, he got stopped by the gestapo forcing him to sign a paper saying that they did not harm him.
