Crash Course for Freshman Year
College, the natural next step for many seniors in high school. After years of hard work—or lack thereof—in high school, it is time to start anew again. You will have new friends, new teachers (they are called professor now), and a new environment. Just like with anything new, it takes some time to adjust to the environment, so listen carefully. Here are a few tips on how to survive freshman year. If you can get through the first year, there is a much better chance you can get through the rest of the years in college.
1. Find where all your classes before the first day of class. While professors are lenient to students who are late on the first week of school, it is still extremely awkward to have a room-full of strangers stare at you as walk in, all frantic and sweaty. Decorate your dorm. For those living on campus, make your room and common area feel like home, because it is where you will be living for the next year. Don’t let it look like a jail cell. Place posters, paintings, a piece of paper—anything that personalizes your living area.
8. Put effort in college. Tuition at UTD is most probably going to rise next year, and with the cost of books, rent, and food, college is going to be very costly. However, going to college is still one of the best investment a high school student can make. College opens up so many opportunities, and therefore, you shouldn’t waste it. Put some effort in your classes, and you will get the results you want in the near future.
9. Lastly, all freshman are in the same boat. Every freshman is just as new to UTD as you are, and they are probably just as terrified. Therefore, you should bond with all your terrified peers and be a terrified cohort. Most people at UTD are friendly, but someone has to initiate every conversation. Take the lead and speak, and the next person you meet might be your best friend

For the past year, I could only provide an indefinite answer to a frequently asked question, How was your freshman year? In fact, those of us who experienced our freshman year could be addressed as “college veterans” will never initiate a conversation with regard to the past year. Semester of Learning Experiences People most always say, “ Learn from you mistakes and achievements.” I would definitely conclude that is exactly what I’ve done this first semester of college. There are many times that I wanted to simply curl into a ball because of all the newness and unfamiliarity. At times I found myself doing just that, but realizing that I needed to toughen up burst from my comfort zone. I can say sleeping through your classes never the best choice, not going just because you find it too easy, missing a class just to write a paper for another class, and differentiating between minimal and highly important status of choices.…

Everyone faces stress, both daily and from larger events. However, stress to some people may be just an inconvenience, while to others it could be debilitating. Whether or not someone may fall prey to their stress depends upon the situation, their disposition, their method of coping and the support they receive. In my own life I find that both emotion-focused coping and problem-focused coping strategies are useful. Social support, however, plays a very large role in my coping ability and helps prevent maldaptive coping strategies.…
