Freshman Year Reflection

Improved Essays
In the beginning of my freshman year of high school, I was the introvert, shy, stay at home type of kid. I never liked to be bothered with helping out the community or giving back to the less fortunate because I always viewed myself as the “less fortunate”.

By the end of the second semester of freshman year, it didn’t take much persuasion for me to sign up for Keystone Club at Boys & Girls Club and I never regretted either. Many of my skills and strengths that I have today was gained from Keystone. I learned how to communicate with people from all the field trips we took, the presentations we presented, and expressing our thoughts and ideas. My money management skills came from the candy sales we did every Friday and the sales we did at special

My senior year could have not started any better. On July 30th, 2015 I get a call from Coach Brock Hayes from Louisiana College offering me a scholarship to play at the college level. Ever since I was small, I always dreamed about playing college football and it finally came to reality. Fall camp was getting ready to start, and I was so excited to get my senior season started. I put in so much work and effort to get into the position I was in, so I was not going to let my team down.…

Since attending Spelman College, I have evolved as a person mentally and socially, especially in my efforts regarding volunteering and the production of social change. Before attending Spelman and joining Lady Buds, a mentoring program for young underprivileged girls, I understood to a degree, how social change impacts people and their communities. However, after being a part of Lady Buds, my understanding of social change vastly increased, specifically how it affects the communities within Atlanta and on a larger scale our society. Upon entering Spelman college, I knew I wanted to be involved with a mentoring group, and while there was a multitude of groups to choose from, I decided on Lady Buds because their mission statement resonated with my goal before entering Spelman College.…

Over the course of my four years of high school, I have participated in clubs and sports where I have learned new things and made memories with friends. During my time in this club, we donated numerous amount of times to soup kitchens and to people who needed clothes and jackets for the cold weather. I was also involved in National Honor Society. My freshman year of college I struggled greatly with the cost of college. I had moved out of my mother’s house and was living with my grandmother. I worked a part time job of 15 hours while taking 19 hours of school. Because I did not have my own place I was still considered under my mother’s income. My mother does not make very much money.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

The Grades Challenge Freshman year was a difficult year for my grades. I was failing a few classes and it seemed like the harder I focused on the percentage, the farther I got away from it. I talked to my teachers about how I could try to get my grades up and was simply told “you won’t get a better grade.” I was stuck with what I had is what I was told, and they ended up being right about that year. I was worried that maybe something was wrong; maybe I wasn’t as smart as I used to be.…

Writing was not a subject that held my interest in high school. Throughout the last twelve years I have found myself having to write letters, proposals, and business correspondence for my employers. I would complete the assignment and move on to the next task. Deciding to further my education I enrolled in Daytona State College and my first class was your ENC 1101. I have seen a change in my pre-class writing style; I have honed my skills, and the different techniques I have learned while taking this course have only improved my writing style.…

I decided that I would take leadership roles throughout high school in order to help serve the less fortunate. KEY Club, a service and fundraising club, became my focus, and I travelled up the ranks to become the school’s external affairs manager and the service committee chair of the Eastern Canada District. As I introduced more extra-curricular activities into my life, organization became more important -- and I was shocked to see how much it helped me save…

As I came to college, my family and I anticipated I would be following a simple mold of a conscientious student. One that is highly focused in some limited number of long term goals. Don 't get me wrong, this only meant that I had high expectations out of my college education. For some people, this path leads them to great success. But, I slowly realized my vision of success needed to have stories from different roads and bridges, than just one simple path.…

Since the first day, time has been flying really fast. Starting a fresh new day, meeting the same teachers and same old friends, I still cannot imagine that I am now a senior! In my senior year, there will definitely be a lot of challenges and obstacles for me to conquer, but I believe that as long as I do everything step by step, I can beat down the difficulties in this senior year. When I was in junior year, I often heard last year’s seniors told me how hard is it to come up with a senior project topic, and they kept on reminding me to start thinking of my topic and finding my mentors. Luckily, I had research method class last year, so I knew how to do my APA style references and I had many presentations experiences last year.…

During my first year at Spelman College, I have not necessarily acquired any new writing skills. However, I have definitely sharpened three imperative writing skills, including: forming my ideas, reasoning, and synthesis (based on readings and discussions) to develop the content of my essays, integrating sources and evidence that corroborate my beliefs, and making my writing more clear and concise. In addition, I still stand in the process of learning to write well under the pressure of time constraints. To illustrate my points, At Spelman, I have been required to read and discuss for every single class I have enrolled in.…

I personally have noticed many changes throughout this course. I mostly noticed how now I analyze my jobs more with my coworkers, bosses and myself. I have one job that I absolutely love and another one that I do not care for very much, I did not really understand why because I get along well with my coworkers and higher ups. As our course went on and I started to understand business some more I then realized why there were certain things that were shaping my views about my jobs. One big thing that I noticed was the team work at my jobs.…

English 219 was my first college level English course, and through attending and completing all of the assignments I have learned many skills that I believe will greatly help me in my future courses in college. Next semester I am enrolled in English 220, and after having taken this course I feel substantially better about continuing on with English courses at a college level. It has helped me to become more confident in my writing skills and provided me with an excellent basis for me to continue on with next semester, and throughout the rest of my schooling experience. Throughout this class I have learned many things, but perhaps the most important is the steps to writing an essay, and the planning options.…

Written language is a trait known to be only possessed by mankind.
