Freshman Retreat Hope

Decent Essays
My hopes for the Freshman Retreat aren’t much. I wish to connect with the people in my advisory, make new friends become acquainted with more people in my grade. I have had a few friends over the past few weeks, but I would say that we aren’t good enough friends to be considered best friends yet. The best way to really get to know people is to live with them for a few days. That way, you share everything together and become better friends as a result. I have had the chance to meet almost everyone in my grade at this point in the year, but I can’t say that I know any of them very well and definitely don’t know most of their names. That is something I hope to accomplish during the retreat: learning people’s names. Everyone in my advisory seems

    • 5 Pages

From as early as middle school the educational system begins to ingrain how important going to college is for each individual, whether they attend a trade school, community college, or university. Students take tests that suggest where they are more knowledgeable, what they are more interested in, what field they are more likely to succeed in. This sets up each individual to discover their interests and hone the necessary skills to ultimately get accepted into the college of their choice. For some this requires a lot more work than others. In “Why Elite-College Admissions Need an Overhaul” composed by Jonathan R. Cole, the John Mitchell Mason Professor of the University of Columbia and author of Toward a More Perfect University, explains…

Each Welcome Week Leader did a phenomenal job at making myself and other incoming freshman excited about the activities offered and the beginning of our college adventures. For many years I have held Bison Pride and nothing in the past week gave me any reason to doubt my choice college. Along with never feeling disappointed, I was also pleasantly surprised. Throughout high school, we were told that college professors are out to fail their students and don’t truly care how we do in their classes. In reality, they want to provide each of us with a challenge and are very willing to assist those students who are ready to put in the time to…

My favorite part of the Blanket Name Game was that when it was my turn I got the same person twice! My least favorite part of the Blanket Name Game was that I did not like when people were too shy to have a turn and have fun playing the game. I felt safe the whole entire time because I trust them and I treat them the way I want to be treated,”With dignity and respect.” I learned a lot of my classmates’ names when we were playing the blanket name game, but I did not learn every single of my classmates’ name,so what I can do to learn their names is to introduce myself to those people who I do not know.…

My observation took place at Gateway Community College Central City Campus as a part of my job as a student services specialist at the front desk counter. I was observing students between 9 A.M. and 12P.M. on a Monday morning, September 12, 2016. I was able to observe about 15 current and prospective students. The college is located in Central City area neighborhood on Buckeye and 12 street, and most of the students at this campus are considered to be “at-risk” students. The student population of Gateway is very diverse, but they have a lot of similarities as well.…

As an ignorant young adult, I wasn’t very outgoing; I was always the shy student, the one who always got bullied and I wouldn’t really talk to anyone. When I turned fourteen, my parents informed me I was to attend confirmation classes. I wasn’t exactly enthused at the new that I would attend it for two years. To add to these, wonderful news; my older brother was going with me too. Goody.…

In attempt to develop range in my observation of support groups, I once again found myself returning to an old stomping ground. Throughout my years in high school, I dedicated several hours a week to my local church in a growth group for high school girls. Although I currently experience mixed emotions with religion, I recalled how influential it was during my teenaged years to have such support, convincing me to return to observe a group to identify ways in why it was so helpful for me during difficult moments in my life. Luckily, my previous growth group leader was still leading groups and graciously accepted my request to be a guest that following week. Meeting once a week, the purpose of these groups was to discuss the Bible and life issues, but based on personal experience, these groups offered much more than a few life lectures.…

After my first two weeks of my junior year, I have discovered that junior year is going to be challenging. I will make critical decisions that will have a major impact on the next five years of my life (and beyond) as I start narrowing down list of colleges and career paths. Junior year will be stressful for me since I'm in multiple extracurricular activities and I'm taking Advanced Placement classes. I am thrilled that I took AP Language and Composition because it is going to prepare me for college and help me become a skillful writer. Lord of the Flies is a fascinating book.…

Sophomore year has been an interesting year so far. The first day I walked into AP World History (aka WHAP) confident, but slightly nervous for the workload to come. It was just an intro-first day type of thing, but Chapter 1 had already been assigned. I remember thinking “All ready? It’s just the first day of school!”…

The next time I attended a camp at CRG it was just me and my two other siblings. My parents and Anthony were left at home. This time, when I stepped onto the campsite, there was no snow and it was warm enough to wear shorts and a t-shirt, but I was nervous to be attending Sibling Camp for the very first time. Without Holland, who was also attending the camp, it would have taken longer to break away from my shyness. She had already known most of the kids our age…
