Freshman Retreat
I gazed around me at the full room. Sitting on the most uncomfortable hard cement surrounded by other freshmen and some seniors, we attentively waited to see what they were going to have us do that day. At the beginning I was nervous because a lot of people said that I would most likely cry and I didn’t know what they would have us do that would make us cry.
The morning of September 17,2015 we met in the commons and loaded the buses. Anxiously the freshman class stood waiting to get inside, as we crowded the door to get inside and we could hear cheering. We all were wondering what was going on inside. It was the seniors cheering us on. All of us finally got inside and were told to do a bunch of random things like, a burping contest, seeing who had the most pennies and wackiest shoe, who could scream the loudest, and who could come up with the most creative design out of our right shoes, but that’s just a little part of what we did that day. I started to be more comfortable after I knew we were going to be doing things like that. After doing all of the random things we got to the more serious things.
We found our small groups back and were asked some questions and we had to tell what we thought about them. As one another of the games, we all got in a circle and had to sit on

She tried cutting her hair shorter, walking with a slouch to try and make herself fit in, but that didn’t work at all. It only made her stand out even more. High School went better for her, she learned to accept the fact and not care that she is going to be tall and tower over most of the kids. From this story I learned to accept myself for how I am now and not to change that because of how everyone else

Colleagues, Gene Autry (and Aerosmith, for what it’s worth) famously sang, “I’m back in the saddle again.” Today, the Arizona Legislature got back in its saddle as the 53rd Legislature, First Regular Session gaveled in for the first time today at noon. The day’s activities had that “first day of school” feeling and was largely pomp and circumstance. Members were officially sworn-in, speeches were made, and family and friends were introduced.…

Manifestaciones (Manifestations) Manifestaciones or short for Mani is a leadership retreat hosted by the Center for Latino Arts and Culture (CLAC) located on College Avenue. Although it is expected that this retreat is only for Latinos since it is hosted by the CLAC, anyone from any race can go because although the retreat is Latino-oriented it is not Latino exclusive. There is an application that every potential participant must fill out and the participants are chosen based on their responses on the application. Because of limited space, not everyone is allowed to go but I was fortunate enough to be chosen as one of the participants.…

Personal Narrative rough draft : Car accident It was early in April of 2016, sunny and beautiful, the day was sure to be full of excitement and energy as student council speeches are due and the final trimester of the year was slowly coming to an end. I woke up that morning to my mother blissfully waking me up with my light turning on and her sweet beautiful voice saying “Wake up, Joey,” I slowly rolled out of bed and stumbled into the shower trying hopelessly to escape the morning and the horrible sensations of waking up early on a Wednesday. As the warm water rushed over me I rehearsed in my head how I would present my student council speech to my teacher. Little did I know how different it would actually be that day.…

Locked In! Elie Wiesel’s work, Night, published in 1958, demonstrates the struggles Jewish society and other minorities faced in order to live a life of liberty. I, myself, felt bound and trapped, not by iron doors, but by words. Although being open and outgoing can help communication growth, rudeness and unnecessary judgement can hinder one’s ability to socialize and express themselves.…

Thinking and unfolding crumpled papers from my first three years here, I remember how horrific and terrifying the first day was. I specifically remember taking deep breaths in and out as the bus unloaded all the students. Before I had gotten on the bus, my mother stood on the porch outside, and I blew at least three kisses to her as I walked down the driveway, and she blew one last kiss to me before I turned around to hop up the steep stairs. By the middle of the day, I began to cry and tried to sneak out to the bathroom. I was crying because I had missed my mom, and the four hours I had been there were far too long.…

My hopes for the Freshman Retreat aren’t much. I wish to connect with the people in my advisory, make new friends become acquainted with more people in my grade. I have had a few friends over the past few weeks, but I would say that we aren’t good enough friends to be considered best friends yet. The best way to really get to know people is to live with them for a few days. That way, you share everything together and become better friends as a result.…

I didn’t not know what I was expecting. On the first day of high school, I stepped into a crowd of students, waiting to enter the building that would become my second home for the next four years. I didn’ not know where I would stand among these highly accomplished individuals, or if I would even amount to the standards set before me. Self-doubt began to fester inside of me as soon as I stepped through the front doors. I expected less and less of myself as time went on.…

The halls of Cherokee Elementary School are very vivid in my memory even in my teen years. The last time I had even seen the school, much less walk in it, was about three or four years ago. Even the rooms in the school are glued to my brain, which leads me to conclude that small things that do not seem that important or please you can please you later. The parking lot was cracked and worn with age, and the half-torn down playground was right next to it, staring down the entrance to the school. Walking to the entrance doors, you see the trailers used as classrooms because at one point, the school was littered with kids from the whole county, but Youngs Grove Elementary sucked up all the kids like vacuums.…

As I watched Frankie jumble up the letters of her name, despite spending all morning practicing the correct way to write them, I wondered if she would ever be able to write out complete sentences without help. This was just one example of the constant repetition I endured and that sometimes tested my patience that summer. My parents had suggested that I volunteer at the Extended School Year (ESY) program for special needs students that ran for the whole month of July. Although I was hesitant due to the fact that the program began early in the morning during summer vacation, I decided to sign up in order to get an idea of whether or not working with children would be something I was interested in pursuing. When I arrived on the first day, I walked into a classroom in which the students and teachers were all familiar with one another and felt extremely out of place.…

Watching soccer has always been a favorite pastime of mine and my family. For as long as I could remember, I woke up to the Premier League, ate lunch with La Liga, and dined with Liga MX. I witnessed the likes of Manchester United vs. Manchester City, Barcelona vs. Real Madrid, and Chivas vs. America. From El Clasico to El Super Clasico, I lived, dreamed, and consumed every team and derby. For every school year from September to June, watching clubs was religious.…
