Freshman College Student Analysis

The first semester as a freshman college student is not a painless experience. It is the first major change individuals experience in their life. Essentially, we are on our own. Yes, we have our parents at home to help with the transition but they are not at school with us. Students must go to class, turn in their assignments, and study without having a parent making sure the work is being done. The reasonability is now on us students which is going to help us when we enter the real world after college. Through my short time in college, I have learned what does and doesn’t work for me when it comes to being successful. Growing up, I was always a very independent person so not have my parents to look over me is not an issue. I am constantly …show more content…
I grew up Catholic and I always felt a disconnect from Christians. This all may seem weird but I felt that there was a calling for me to be at Trinity. In the article, An Open Letter to Young Christians on Their Way to College by Stanley Hauerwas, he talks about just that. To be a student is a calling is one of the many pieces of advice he gave and I agree with is one hundred percent. To this day, I know I have not come to my faith yet but I am working towards it. I have been setting aside time of me to talk to the Lord and I am allowing him to be in control of my life. I just know in my heart I haven’t completely come to my faith. In a short period of time being here I have definitely become closer to God. Growing up I never really associated with my faith but I always believed in it. The choice to follow a more Christian than Catholic view is simply due to the fact my heart felt right when I practiced the Christian beliefs. I feel more comfortable and able to open up about my feelings and not be judge being Catholic. My biggest fear was that I would not be accepted by Christians. However, I am happy to say that has not happened to me. Growing in my faith is extremely important to me and I cannot wait to see where my faith takes me

In the prior reading, Tough explicates that the college conundrum is the increase in college dropouts in America, even when the value of a bachelor degree has skyrocketed, and graduate rates in other countries have dramatically expounded. Throughout the chapter, Tough sought to determine the causes for this complication. From his findings, he was able to uncover the notion of the achievement gap, and its effect on the output for graduates. For instance, he presents this concept in the words of Jeff Nelson, by which he writes, “The average incoming score of our students is hovering around a fourteen, or the tenth percentile …. what I do believe is that ninety percent of the population is reaching a better education than our students have received”…

The Roman Catholic Church has been a second home for me and the community has become family. I grew up learning and building a love for the morality, compassion, teachings, discipline, support and safety that comes with being a part of the Catholic community and attending Catholic school. The Catholic traditions that I have experienced throughout my life have shaped the way I experience God now. “Scripture and Tradition are mutually related: Tradition gave birth to the Scriptures and is always necessary in order to interpret the Scriptures; the Scriptures, in turn, are the text that definitively expresses the Apostolic Tradition” (Ontario Catholic Secondary Curriculum…

Culture has influenced me in many ways and has prepared me to become a successful incoming college student. For example simple tasks with learning something new was easy to do because my family was always there to help guide me in doing what is right. Being in a mixed culture has taught me to adapt to a lot of changes, and be open minded about different cultures.…

Taking long walks through a nature park is a well-known activity to find peace, quiet, and enjoy the unique beauty of the outdoors. People walk along man-made paths that wind through various sections of the park, and sometimes even explore off the beaten path. At Penn State, students typically explore the Arboretum, a large nature park, in order to separate themselves from the hectic, everyday life of a college student. Students have heavy loads of coursework that can be overwhelming and raise stress levels, and with forty-thousand students it can be challenging to find a place for self-reflection and purification. Open-air landscaping, infinite assortments of plants and flowers, and unique sculptures all provide college students with a separate…
