Freshman Class Reflection

Spending my time at RVEC has been a quick overlook of how things really are in high school and as being an early college student. I am at my first quarter, and it has been a quick roll with learning how to glide along effectively. This includes study skills, time management, and how to better improve my learning in all classes, even outside activities. All the skills I’ve learned so far from freshman seminar is really showing an effect with how I become successful here at RVEC. The best part that I really enjoyed about the freshman seminar class is that it makes me realize and understand what life is really going to be like when I’m first starting finish school/college, when I live the “adult” life, pursuing my career, and withholding many responsibilities. As a freshman, I was first clueless to the things I needed to know. Such as how to keep my grades up, the things I needed to know about the things expected out of me, and what will the next few years at RVEC hold for me. But indeed, the freshman seminar helped me with those things I was concerned about and what I actually wouldn’t have thought about, or something that I felt like was not important to know. The first thing I learned in the class was time management. Time management taught me how to …show more content…
Study habits was something I never knew how to do, I would try sometimes, but I once stopped trying to study all together because it became pointless as I saw my performance in that certain subject. When the class first started on this, we found out how we learn. This is the key to study habits. Without knowing how you learn, you can’t study. I learned that I am a listener and will write down things that the teacher says in my notes and ask questions when I don’t understand. These skills followed my way along my study habits. My habits was between making index cards and repeating what I learned so I can understand and not lose knowledge about it the next

Well it has been almost 4 months that I have been attending Roanoke Valley Early College. I love it here and I don’t see how anyone couldn’t. So far I have learned a lot about school. By taking time to observe my surroundings and everyone around me, I have learned that everyone in high school is not your friend and that I am learning how to sense a bad vibe before I let anyone get too close to me. RVEC is the only school that has taught me that all teachers are not these people that hate their job because the teachers here including the ones I don’t take yet are always showing us that they really want to be there and help us and teach us.…

Coming into English 101, I really did not know what to expect. This was my first college writing class so I had no idea what it was going to be like. In high school I would have considered myself to be a decent writer, not the best or not the worst. I would never impress anyone with my writing skills but I could still come across as educated on my topic.…

So staying in the dorms was an interesting opportunity to really test my newfound patience. I also learned many valuable life lessons and received an abundance of helpful advice at SouthWestern Michigan College. Being proactive instead of reactive was one of the best sayings I ever heard in Business 201 – Principles of Management with Stacey Horner. This is one of the best classes I could recommend to anyone, reading “Who Moved My Cheese” is what in fact inspired me. Several other helpful classes I would recommend are; Educational Exploration, Intro to Computer Technology, Intro to Meetings and Events, Professionalism Workshop, Business Law I, Micro and Macro Economics, Human Resource Management, and Two Dimensional Design.…

Joining the New Visions program was one of the wisest decisions I have made. When nurses that I shadow at Unity Hospital express how jealous they are that they didn’t have a program like this when they were in high school, it reminds me to take advantage of this opportunity that not every student receives. I am confident that when I graduate college, I will be able to recollect this program, and how it led me to be successful. I will reminisce about the long hours dedicated to each college-level assignment in determination to receive a grade in the high 90’s, or that moment when I witnessed a five pound baby be born from a cesarean delivery, or even when I stood next to the operating table observing a total knee replacement surgery, while the surgeon and nurses took the time to teach me about what they were doing--an opportunity that not even college nursing students were able to see. Every assignment I completed, conversation I had, and person I met, has transformed me into a more educated and open minded student.…

Cognitive lenses that shapes my thinking are my study habits. I created my own techniques to study because not just one way is always affective. When I experimented with different study methods I rewrote my notes, broke down sections to study per day, listened to music, and I made songs this with my notes. Each method enhanced my thinking because it is easier to remember lyrics than book information.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

It was great being able to get an older students perspective about studying habits and how to get involved on our campus. Another helpful resource was the Education and Career Planning projects we had to complete. We completed Degree Comparison, the Two-Year Academic Planning worksheet, the career profile, and our resume. Doing these assignments was more than just turning them in for a grade. They are extremely useful.…

Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 1010 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. When I first started this course, I was scared and didn’t really know what to expect. I branched out to different styles and types of essays as well as incorporating outside sources into my work. When I received my first essay back with the feedback and the grade, I realized that I was not a really good writer.…

Going into this college writing class, I did not know what to expect. All I anticipated about this class was that it is a general education class, that was required to graduate. Sophomore year has been an interesting year so far. The first day I walked into AP World History (aka WHAP) confident, but slightly nervous for the workload to come. It was just an intro-first day type of thing, but Chapter 1 had already been assigned. I remember thinking “All ready? It’s just the first day of school!”…

English 219 was my first college level English course, and through attending and completing all of the assignments I have learned many skills that I believe will greatly help me in my future courses in college. Next semester I am enrolled in English 220, and after having taken this course I feel substantially better about continuing on with English courses at a college level. It has helped me to become more confident in my writing skills and provided me with an excellent basis for me to continue on with next semester, and throughout the rest of my schooling experience. Throughout this class I have learned many things, but perhaps the most important is the steps to writing an essay, and the planning options.…

Written language is a trait known to be only possessed by mankind. Although other species may have audible forms of communication, man is able to record and document his thoughts, feelings, or events that have unfolded in a way that can be viewed multiple times without him having to use his voice over and over. Literacy is a skill that adults in the United States are expected to have; but the level of your literacy says a lot about you and can have a tremendous impact on what career you end up in. For this reason, this college English class is a requirement for all those seeking a degree. Not only did I learn how to think of subjects and topics more objectively, but I learned a multitude of different modes and strategies I can employ in my writing.…

Prior to English 101, I have been taking several English classes, but each class helped me little by little to an English 101 student. Learning to have efficient studying habits such as study the day of the class and not doing things last minute. Also learning how to actually study other subjects and how to think critically. This has increased my learning habits. My student habits have changed dramatically,…

Avoiding the 5 minute rule in the morning also really helped me stop missing class or being really late. I realized going back to bed could isn’t worth the extra 5 minutes because it puts you in a deeper sleep cycle, making it harder for me to get up when my alarm does go off. I have not used any resources on campus, but If I had to use any resources in the future I am always free to use the student wellness center on campus which focuses on the health of students at St. Francis as well as the career center if I was ever to be unsure of my major. Thinking back on freshmen seminar, I found this class to be very helpful. At first I didn 't really see the point in it, I felt as if I knew everything.…
