Fresh Off The Boat Tv Show Analysis

Two shows that I watch on television are Fresh off the Boat and Pretty Little Liars. Fresh off the Boat is a comedy program about an Asian family that has moved to the United States in hopes of achieving the American Dream. Throughout the series you follow the life of Eddie the eldest son and see all the challenges he faces by being thrown into a completely different culture than that of his own. He quickly becomes friends with boys from several different backgrounds and begins to adjust to his new surroundings. ("About Fresh Off the Boat TV Show Series," n.d.) I believe this show reflects the diversity of the United States fairly well because while it does shows Eddie and his family as Asian most of the people he goes to school with are white with a few black …show more content…
This show follows the lives of four teenage girls and their boyfriends as they try to survive high school while avoiding the strikes of a mystery character called “A” that is determined to makes them look guilty of murder. ("Pretty Little Liars Episodes, Blogs and News - Freeform.go.com," n.d.) Most of the show takes place in the girls’ high school so we get a good idea of the diversity of the students. This show is well diverse and though several of the main characters are white four of the main character actually have pretty diverse ethnicities. Tyler Blackburn ethnicity is English, Yugoslavian/Croatian, Welsh, German, Scots-Irish (Northern Irish), Czech, Swedish, Cherokee Native American, Comanche Native American. Troian Bellisario ethnicity is Italian, Serbian (father), African-American, Louisiana Creole (African, French) (mother). Shay Mitchell ethnicity is Irish, Scottish, evidently some Spanish (father), Filipino, some Spanish (mother). Janel Parrish ethnicity is European (father), Chinese (mother). It also provides cultural experiences that can broaden viewers’ perspectives and allow them to gain respect and tolerance towards those lifestyles they are not familiar with. Certain shows highlight new trends and styles that allow the American lifestyle to evolve. Some shows highlight the divergent trends of homes, food, fashion, and other cultural customs. Peculiar ideas and trends have been introduced through television over the years. At first viewers are usually appalled by the new “craze”, then they find the whole idea humorous.…

There aren’t many problems with this episode, except there isn’t diversity in the cast. The cast consists mostly of white males and the non-white males are perceived crazy. For example, when Sam and Dean ask the townspeople about the abduction they talk to a lady that tells them she thinks its fairies and they just laugh in her face. Later they find out she was right and still think she’s…

In America most people are composed of diverse nationalities. Each person has a story behind their eyes, such as how they got to the United States and where they came from. If someone were to guess my specific nationality based off my generic name and pale skin color, most likely the guess would be Irish or Norwegian. In reality, my nationality is from all over, my closest and most recent ancestor from Italy. America is a country entirely based off immigrants, which means everyone has a different origin and backstory.…

TITLE: Portrayal of coloured people in foreign sitcoms INTRODUCTION I have chosen this topic because, being an Indian, I, myself have noticed Indians being portrayed not realistically but stereotypically in foreign sitcoms. And not just Indians but all people of colour. Pick any foreign sitcom, be it The big bang theory, The Simpsons or any movie like Mean girls, etc, you will notice that they all have this one thing in common: Stereotypes.…

Blacks as loud, comical, uneducated, or sassy. Latinas are portrayed as feisty, sexy, domesticated, and dumb. Anyone who has ever seen ‘Modern Family’ knows Sofia Vergara’s character, Gloria, is a walking stereotype. Though inclusion is important on television, it is ineffective if all nonwhite characters are featured for the sole purpose of being the “token” Asian, Black, or Latino. Racial inclusion is also ineffective when all minority characters possess qualities that meet Eurocentric beauty standards.…

Race in Media has been and always will be a topic under fire and conversation. More recently how Cultural appropriation is used in media has been a point many have been arguring about. When looking at both concept of race and nation in media it is a common theme that media stays commonly patriotic to the country that it is filmed/made in. Media that goes against the grain in a diplomatic style, for instance ‘Black Mirror’ a controversial TV series by Charlie Brooker that went against the norms by refusing to represent England as ‘doing just fine’. Girls play with Barbie dolls and boys play with monster trucks. Asians love Korean pop music and all Mexicans know the Taco Bell dog, right? As kids grow up, they are constantly surrounded by social media, television, celebrities, and other authoritative figures such as parents and grandparents. In this day in age, it is almost impossible not to judge a person based on how they look because of how media outlets characterize certain “types” of people. Michael Omi states in his writing, “In Living Color: Race and American Culture,” that sexism and racism-fueled events suggest the American population has created one big “system of inequality which has shaped, and in turn been shaped by, our pop culture” (539).…

Stereotypical American American Dad is an animated television series that stereotypes everyone and everything they can. The writers of this series, American Dad, uses these stereotypes for laughs, and they are very successful at it. The latent effect of this humorous television show is that it brings more and more stereotypes into the culture. American Dad allows the continuation of placing stereotypes on groups of people which leads to negative consequences. Season 1 episode 6 of American Dad is a prime example of a non-multicultural piece of literature.…
