The region of Catalonia is currently located at the furthermost northern tip on the eastern side of Spain. Currently Spain is a part of the European Union, a joint union of states in
Europe. Though part of the EU, Spain has had a difficult time regarding its economy and its hold to certain regions like the Basque country and Catalonia. The Catalans of Catalonia have had a very tough and subjugated history from the Spaniards dating back since its incorporation all the way to the Franco Dictatorship. Catalonia has also been supporting Spain financially by alleviating its debt burden. Republic in hopes of breaking free of the Spanish rule. Many battles would ensure but in the end the Battle of the Ebro would render the Republican side defenseless and Francisco Franco’s
Regime would begin. At the end of the Civil war all the way through Franco’s Rule there would be many rules and regulations made against the Catalonians. Some of these included taking any and all of the democratic liberties from the Catalans. There was a rise in censorship for any who spoke against the government, many leftist parties where shut down, and the Catalan press was silenced. Along with these, the Catalan culture was heavily outlawed with the banning of books, and the Catalan language. Many prisoners were taken into custody, a handful of Catalans were also killed, and a large majority of Catalans where forced to leave the country due to persecution. Debt are not paid back. Most of the cash that Catalonia gives to Spain goes to the poorer regions along with the Capital of Madrid. While the help it receives from them is minimal.
Catalonia makes its comparison to the region of Scotland from the UK. Scotland has had the opportunity to vote on an independence referendum during the fall of 2014. The people there where allowed to vote and the results ended up being 55.3 percent opposing separation, while only 44.7 supported a separation of the states. Those supporting the Scottish Independence argued that they were also a rich region that was capable of holding their own economy and supporting themselves rather than be tied down economically by the rest of the UK, namely
England. Scotland was found to have had a large reserve of Oil ready to be used, along with a good standing economy. Those favoring separation believe that Catalonia would be better
